Title: Oil/water heat exchanger availability
Post by: waqas on June 25, 2009, 01:13:13
Does anyone know if the oil/water heat exchanger that came installed as standard on all fuel-injected M-129 engines (250SL, 250SE, etc) also came installed on the carb version? (250S)

Yes they're also on the 250S.

I've seen them on 230SL's as well. Quite rare but they did install them as an option. I think I still have a few of those exchangers around here.

Only going by the 230SL (edition C) parts book, it appears the oil/water heat exchanger was installed originally on all 230SLs. I have never owned a 230 and make no statement from experience.

I don't believe that all 230SL were delivered with the oil heat exchanger. It is not shown in Spare Parts List Edition A (July 1963) but does show up in Edition C (Group 18 p/n 000 188 44 01). However, my 230SL (Aug. 1966) did not come with it. Most likely an option for the late 230SL as Dan pointed out.

Alfred is correct: the heat exchanger was optional on the M127-II engine, but came standard on all M129 engines. By the time the M130 came along, there was an oil cooler next to the radiator.

(A recent post by ja17 also confirmed that the heat exchanger was standard in the 250S)
