Title: bumper fog light switch
Post by: scp on June 07, 2009, 23:00:39
i have a 1968 280sl (US model) with original bumper mounted fog lights.  A previous owner mounted a toggle switch under the dash to operate the lights.  I suspect this is not accurate.  Can someone please post the proper switch type and location for these lights?  Are they possibly wired to the dashboard main headlight switch?  Pictures and description would be appreciated greatly.

Thanks in advance.

Switch fits in the center wooden console box between the seats, directly behind the ashtray.  This switch is mounted on a metal "Z" shape piece covered in either matching leather or MB-Tex (depending on what interior you have) that has three screw holes for screwing to the wood box bottom.  This mounting piece fits directly behind the ashtray with the switch the same knob as your lighter but with a green plastic insert.  This switch also operated a rear red foglight (only on Euro models). Note some SLs came with ywo switches mounted there, for foglights and for the heated rear window of the hardtop.

The standard light switch on the dash can be pulled out when the switch is turned to the first or second position to the right. Pulling the switch out activates the fog lights if they are correctly wired. If the car has Euro headlights, the pull out also turns on the fog light bulbs in the Euro headlight units.
