I got this car with the glove box retainer spring(s) missing. The only way to keep it closed is to keep it locked. Whoever jury-rigged this (some time ago) drilled a small hole in the left side of the glove box and turned a screw in, to hold the box body up about 1 cm higher than it should be. This causes the curved rod attached toi the glove box door to stop on the dash board - which prevents the door from opening beyond 90 degrees. This is ok, but when the glove box door is closed (and locked to stay closed), the left had side of the dorr does not aligh with the rest of the dash, it's up about 1 cm - which is most annoying.
Now, since I've never seen what the spring or springs look like, I can't figure out how fabricate the whatever should be there so the glove box door works like it should.
Can anyone give me a good descrition of how the spring(s) mount and how they work? Are these springs (and whatever other necessary hardware) still available for purchase through MB?

Hello William,
These are a special compression spring with two forks, one on each end. They are fairly inexpensive and still available from Mercedes. If you need part numbers or diagram let me know. Also Tom Hanson on this list will also supply them he works for a dealer.
the glove box alignment can be acheved by adjustment at the hinge.

Look in the Parts Inventory page.
As Joe says, the spring is a compression spring and does not bend. The forks slide against each other inside the spring.

Wow, $32.00 US. That seems like a lot of cash for a spring. Is that reasonable?

You need to check to see if the $32 includes the two forks for the ends of the curved piece on the door and the post on the glove box. I had the forks and needed to replace the spring, I found one for a couple of bucks at the local auto parts store and it works just fine (I did have the old bent spring to use as a guide). Can someone else supply the dimensions??

The forks were included when i bought mine.
You could make these forks and buy the correct spring but I don't have a workshop setup at home.
They worked very well.
