Title: Retrosound stereo
Post by: kbudd on May 05, 2009, 16:03:19
I replaced an aftermarket Alpine cassette player with a retrosound stereo in my 280SL. I know it isn't correct but it looks OK (in my opinion) and it sounds good. There are some pictures on the retrosound website gallery. I would like to get one of the new Becker radios eventually but they are very expensive.

Not bad at all! I like how the textured surface of face looks a bit like the cross-hatch surface of the horizontal trim that runs across the upper face of the dash.
All you need now is a pair of Becker knobs to match the other knobs on the dash (available from Becker USA).

Becker knobs are a great idea if they will fit the shafts. I am also looking for some material to match the basketweave trim on the dash. If I can find something, a friend of mine with a machine shop is going to make a new faceplate for the radio to match.

Coool!  This could be made to look more stock if wanted.  A Graphics shop can make an insert for the horizontal lines, laminated or with a plastic overlay.  If the knobs can be replaced, i'd say this is a viable option for those having problems justifiying a $1000+ becker.

I found some stainless steel material that looks similar here http://www.onlinemetals.com/merchant.cfm?id=854&step=2&top_cat=1 (http://www.onlinemetals.com/merchant.cfm?id=854&step=2&top_cat=1)

If you mean the Becker w/ SAT/NAV, I'm not sure that the maps are available for the US.  Does anyone know?
