Title: My name is Joe...I just got a rusty 230sl from 1966
Post by: Joeranger on April 01, 2009, 03:29:51
Hi Joe.....

1st post, just an intro. I have seen most of my questions addressed here. Floor rust is my biggest issue.

I just became a 230sl guy after a brokering a blind deal at a pub.

It is a cosmetic beauty, but has frame rust in floor. Engine restored very well. Suspension well preserved with grease. Not sure on brakes. Needs body work first. Previous owner gave up on a restoration using original parts. I just want to get it running well enough for a Sunday drive.
I will post more when I get it into my garage. I had it flat bedded right to my mech for an engine eval and start.
This is a low budget, get it running project; not a car show restoration. I can't sell it, so the resale value is moot.

Welcome Joe,

Congrats on your new "acquisition"... I'd love to hear more how "brokering a deal at a pub"  would get you ownership, but prohibits you from selling. Like, "where's that pub?". It looks like you'll spend lots of time reading on the site! Don't forget the Technical Manual...

Welcome!  If you just want to be able to go for a drive, I wouldn't worry about the rust too much.  You can always build a new floor and trunk out of plywood and use a hot gluegun to hold it all together.   ;D    Looks like a nice car.  I also wonder about "brokering a deal in a pub".

A friend had thrown in the towel on restoration and didn't want some stranger on ebay profiting from his loss. He knew he would never get it to where he wanted it (see pic below)

He wanted it to go to someone who would enjoy it and get it running; not flip it for a fast buck.

I just want to get it drivable and have a very limited budget.

Think of a picture of an attractive model washing a new Benz, to understand the humor

Picture removed to get thread back on track

Sorry guys...

That's not a Pagoda directly above.  :o

That's OK if it isn't a Pagoda Above.

It's still pretty nice to look at.  ;D

Whoa, this is very inappropriate here. It should be immediately moved to "Body, Interior, Paint, etc." since that covers cleaning and polishing.

I've asked Joe to tone it down. I know it was his friends dream he was portraying... all he wants is a great looking Pagoda, I'm sure  ;) If people take offense, I'll remove the picture...

Joe, you got a nice looking car there and for a price many of us can only dream of paying for a pagoda.
Anyways, what was the car you were showing in the other picture, all I saw was a nice shiny body.   ;)
Not at all offended, but like the idea of it being moved to the body and polishing section, she can polish mine anytime, but alas I have a fiancee who looks like that already.
Keep us posted with your hot glue gun adventures with the rust.
Just hope you dont need to buy stock in thick rubber soled shoes like Fred Flintstone.

Actually, the rust doesn't look to bad to me. I got more info from the owner. He was going to race it which is why they did such a nice job on the engine.
(will post better pics)

OK, got it in the garage. More pics to come.

How do you open the soft top cover/hatch if it doesn't open up? I pulled the handle behind the seat which popped the soft top. Now the hatch/cover is loose, but won't open. Do I force it?

Well, it runs!  :)  It is an old car with a perfectly restored engine. Starts right up and hums like a cougar. Drives well, but I am not used to the Clutch. Compared to my wrangler, it feels like it will break.

There are a lot of dings; the paint is old and cracked. Might be some bondo underneath. All of the chrome is "speckled".   Carpets are faded. Things rattle.
Parts of the floor are rusted through.
