Title: Pictures of windshield (windscreen) logos wanted
Post by: 66andBlue on March 30, 2009, 00:16:50
Hello everyone,
I am in the process collecting information on windshield/windscreen manufacturers for our cars that I plan to put into the technical manual.
At the moment I have found three photos for W113 cars and one for a W111 on this site that I am reposting here together plus the one from my car.

Please take a moment, shoot a picture and post it, and if possible include the following information:
Original glass?
Clear glass?
Tinted glass?
Tinted glass with shade on top?
Thanks!

Hey Alfred, unfortunately half of my writing has a staff parking sticker on it! I'l try and get a new sticker tomorrow at work-- then I'll try a shot! I can tell you, mine looks more like yours than any of the others. No logo. Original I believe. The writing looks like this:

     Laminated
Kinonglas-Kristall HI
 M19/ A S 1 Plate
  ~~~~     D 107
Hi Alfred,
Is this some kind of a test of our photography skills?  It took me seven tries to get this right!
Like yours ,  my car is a 1966 model also. It came to me from blazing hot Austin, Texas so perhaps the PO changed the glass to a darker tint?
Regards, Larry
Hi Alfred,
My car is a 250 SL from 1967. The glass is tinted with a shaded band on top. I am not sure if it is original, but it could be. There is fine pitting and some delamination at a few corners. Like Larry, I also found it difficult to take a nice shot. The text has faded through the years:
LAMINATED
Kinonglas-Kristall-IRA / S-BFG-HI
M 26 / AS 1 Plate
~~~  D-96

I hope this is useful for you.

Thank you Martijn, Larry and James!
Now we have Sekurit, Kinons and one PPG, what about Sigla??

Are most of you driving without windshields these days, really "top down" ??  :)

The easiest way photographing these logos is with light on the dash, not the window, so it reflects through the glass.
And don't use a flash!

Alfred

Mine has

SIGLA (surrounded by a rectangle, with a slight indent up from the bottom)

This one has been there since 1980, when I got the car.

Here's mine. Sorry so dirty. I haven't washed the car yet. Does anyone know what that Mercedes text is above the windshield logo? I assume mine is original. 1970. Early in the model year. August of 1969. I believe.
Option 598 from data card: tinted glass wraparound, darker on top if it is, in fact, original. I could not testify to it's originality. But, I am pretty confident.

Thanks Jonny, but we really need a picture  ;)
Mark, sorry I cannot help you deciphering the scratched up decal but your windshield is most likely original since Kinon was (one of) the OEM.
But for this crop Andy gets the price, a VIRACON windshield, who else has ever seen one??
Keep on taking pictures please!

Hello, Alfred,

Checked my screen.

Most likely aftermarket as there are no markings.

Non-tinted glass with top tint.  :-[

If you google Kinonglas - Kristall, it shows the registration in 1966 and the owner is Saint Gobain Glass. So where does Sekurit figure into this. Were Saint Gobain and Sekurit separate companies and then later merged?

Hi Wallace,
you have to wait for the answer - I like suspense you know. ;)
Seriously, this is what I want to write about about for the Tech. Manual and/or perhaps for Pagoda World if Rodd needs any material for the next (next???) issue.
But the short answer to your question is "no", Sekurit is a Trademark of S-G.

Here is another quirky question. Are the logos on RHD cars on the right?  I was hoping that Naj would have the answer but his car is so illegal, unbelievable! :o
Naj, I am kidding - but isn't there a UK requirement that windscreens, including replacements, must show safety codes? Just curious.
Anyone down under have a picture? What about the "Blue Pagoda by the sea"?

And what does John "thelews" red 250SL have?

Okay, let's try this. I just took a shot of the windshield logo. I am having no luck getting this to post. I sent it to Peter VanEs to post to this string. Peter sent me the proper directions so let's see if this works.

Here's the label from an australian delivered 230sl

I think it's original as it still has a german sticker on the drivers side of windscreen.  The white background is some cardboard I used to allow me to focus

Hi

My 1969 RHD 280sl has a clear screen, no tint. It is de-laminating at the edges and I have no idea if it is original.

The markings on my screen are on the left of the car (passenger side on a RHD car).

Hi All,

From a November '67 250SL. Tinted band at top of screen. Cannot confirm it is original.

I am finally getting around to replacing my badly scratched, seal leaking Viracon windshield. Working wth my MB parts guy, he says he can get clear, tinted, or "heat resistant". I would like the heat resistant one, but I want to try to confirm that this is really what it is. I was able to get the markings:
Sekurit
Saint-Gobain
FIRA/F-HI
DOT 27 M582 AS1
(squiggly line) D289
I searched all over but can't get any info about "FIRA/F-HI", "M582", or "D289"
Anyone know what these marking mean?

Andy,

On my data card, I have the code "598 heat insulated glass". If you have your data card, look and see if it has the option.

Hey wwheeler, the windshield I am removing is not original. My data card says 598 which is "Tinted glass, wrap-around, darker on top", according to our tech manual. Where are you getting "598 heat insulated glass"?.
But I don't see how the code numbers printed on the windshield would be the same as the option code numbers on a data card?

Andy,

Checking my 280 SE codes from the data card with the ones in the tech manual, they all match up where applicable. As translated from the Classic Center, code 598 is "heat insulated glass". Quite honestly, I don't know what that exactly consists of, but that is what they called it.

I believe "Heat insulated" was what we now call tinted glass. That's what my Classic Center furnished data card showed also.

My windshield has been replaced.  I don't know when, would have to dig into the records...I'd guess in the 70's.

My 1970 280SL, VIN: 113044 12 018253  data card (not original, but copy provided by Mercedes-Benz Classic Car Center) also shows  "598- Heat-insulating glass".   I believe I have original glass in the vehicle still, but unfortunately I cannot provide a picture of the actual glass or logo because I recently sent the car in to have it repainted.
