Title: Value of a soft top frame?
Post by: Faust on March 23, 2009, 00:02:10
I have two that I rescued from early cars. One needs a rebuild, the other is rougher but salvageable. Should I just eBay these?

Well soft top frames seem to be for sale on ebay all the time for $3500 or so, but I've never actually seen one sell.    I think if you NEED one they are worth a lot, but that if you HAVE one that no one needs, it isn't worth that much.  At least that seems to be the experience I am having with my left and right 190SL doors and hood, and the experience I HAD with a 107 hardtop that finally went for $100.   You can find plenty of 107 hardtops on craigslist ranging from $300 to $1000.

That is my experience, although I wasn't anticipating $3500.00. I had several excellent 113 doors, MB will still sell you one for $4700.00. I put one on eBay and couldn't get an opening bid at $100.00. In the end, I sold them to a Mercedes restorer for considerably more. It seems the restorers are more able to "find the market".

I understand the number of "California Coupes" drives the need for soft top frames.

Put it on ebay.....

I had several items that I was told by "experts" were worth $25-100 sell for a total of $1500 on ebay.

Hemmings is also a good source; many old timers and salvage yards use it.

In 25 years, I have yet to have a Hemmings ad not pay off.

I sold a wood kit for $225 and my grille there, while it languished on many a web-board.

If you are a MBCA member they can post on the Star  magazie classifieds too.
