Sorry, if I should have known this. When I search and hit a locked topic but want to continue the thread - is my only recourse to start a new topic?

No... you could ask me to unlock it for you... unless I've locked it for a very specific reason (i.e. to kill a discussion that's going the wrong way) I'll unlock it for you.
