I have some questions regarding these production changes. (I apologize if the answers to my questions already exist on our site.)
1. When (production #)did the inserts in the window cranks change from black to interior color?
2. When " did the ashtray cover change from black to interior color?
3. When " did the grab handle on the passenger door change from black to interior color?

Here is one reply regarding the ash tray and window crank (the search function is a very good thing)
The ashtray lid was always covered with a thinner MB-Tex (vinyl) foil. The regular MB-Tex or leather material was too thick. Many have changed the material later, but if leather is chosen, thin leather ("Spaltleder") should be used.
All 230SL up to VIN 113042-..-012466, resp. August 6, 1965, had black ashtray lid inserts, regardless of upholstery color. This is also the case with the inserts in the window crank levers. From there on, the color matched the upholstery.

Thank you for the reply. I remember reading that same information regarding interior changes. I am not sure just how accurate it is though. I have seen way too many 230SL's after # 012466 with black ashtrays and black window crank inserts with different color interiors. Their owners swear they never changed them. It would be interesting to see if other members with original interior cars after 012466 have matching/non-matching interior hardware.
