Title: Messerschmitt KR200 - VDO Kienzle mechanical clock
Post by: swood1 on March 29, 2021, 15:56:00
Hi all,

I have just finished restoring a couple of VDO Kienzle mechanical clocks for a customer.  He has an interest in the little Messerschmitt bubble cars, he has a few of these cars.  I am curious did Mercedes ever use this clock on the earlier SL or was it always the electro-mechnical.

FYI> Photo showing clocks (after being repaired/serviced).  One of them was badly abused, the customer thought it was beyond repair, he seems happy I fixed them both for him.

Regards

Steve

I am not an expert on this, just studied a bit 190SL clocks. There were 8 days wind up clocks in 190SL. But they looked a bit different. They did not have knurled nut in the edge of the face and the face itself had a different design.

Hi Pawel,

These seem to run for 2 days at best, it's interesting that VDO Kienzle were supplying other manufacturers but with slightly different clock.  I wonder if at the time the Messerschmitt was deemed as a car not in daily use therefore they used a clock that only ran for a couple of days.

Just speculating: price of 8 days clock might have been different.

Also: the clock in 190SL is in the glove box door. You can open the door and wind up the clock. If the clock in the Messeschmidt was in the dash - you need to be able to wind it up from outside.

Buyers beware that most for sale these days are electric operated reproductions. The manual wind-up is the real thing!

A broken clock for the same price I paid for my '71 working driving Volkswagen with rebuilt flat four fuel injected 1,700 cc engine that was also used in the Porsche 914 and brand new tires. Of course, the electro-mechanical clock in it also does not work.
