Title: Wheel paint color
Post by: rbouch8828 on July 22, 2020, 15:34:30
Were the wheels painted body color in all years, or only in the 230, 250?

I believe the Wheel Paint being Body Colored was related to the Two-Piece dog-dish style hub-cap/trim ring vs the one-piece hub-cap used starting in December 1967.

Since a handful of 280's were built in nov/dec 1967, there is a chance some 280's were built with two piece hub-caps and hence would most-likely have painted wheels.

Also, since some 250's were built in late December 1967, there might be some 250's with the one-piece hub-caps.

two piece hub caps = color painted wheels
one piece hub cap = no body color on wheels

Aficionados - please correct if my comments are not accurate !!!

According to the list of changes (published in Pagoda World 25) starting at VIN 45, Dec 1967 the 280 SL got the one piece wheel covers. So there should be no one piece covers on a 250 SL.

What do we mean by "one/two piece hub caps"? Can someone post pics to show the difference? Thank you.
