Hello All,
I have finally gotten around to repainting my chipped up full dish (280 SL style) hubcaps.
I bought the plastic center stencil a few months back from Authentic Classics in NY- $45 bucks.
We got to fit the stencil on the hub cap and its too small in diameter by about 1/4 inch so the outside ring doesn't cover the outside ring of the chrome embossed star in the center.
I am waiting for a response from Authentic but I thought I would post here. Odd thing.
Are there 2 sizes of center hub cap stars? Early 2 pc and later one piece ???
It's interesting to find that my small star stencil fits the chrome star on the trunk lid though. Can you purchase a stencil for the trunk star also ?
Murphy's Law strikes again.
best,
jz

Yes, certainly, it is so. For the cars of the sixties. Earlier there were even more sizes for various models of M-B cars.
-
There are 2 versions sold at Auth Classics. 230-250 version and 280 version. Maybe you purchased the 230-250 version?

Yes Tyler, I got the beige colored stencil for 190/230/250 SL's.
The 280 SL stencil is shown as black plastic.
Idiot me didn't differentiate. I stupidly told them 1967 250 SL forgetting I had later hub caps.
Mystery solved and I am the fool.
Thanks, Tyler.

The Pagoda Group has several sets of stencils available for Full Members. If Authentic Classics done come through with an exchange, then you should put your name down on the list. Search and you will find where the list is at the moment...
-
Keep in mind that the stencils produce a slightly feathered edge. You can also use electrical tape and a sharp exacto knife for a crisp line if thats what you desire.
-
Thanks gentlemen.
I ordered the later, larger stencil from Authentic Classic and will return the smaller one for a credit.
Tyler, so the stencil is not the perfect solution? Why is there a waiting line for stencil use then ? How was it done at the factory?
Anyway, I will give the stencil a shot and see how it looks. I will let you know.
Plus upon completion my late model stencil is available for all to use.

Yes the stencil is how the factory did it. Produces a slight (correct) feathered edge. But it is hard to get uniform. Others prefer the clean sharp edge line. Its a personal preference choice.
-
I would be happy to donate a silicone rubber and/or plastic type stencil to the club to help reduce the waiting time.
Just let me know where to send it.

I have the current north american stencil and will be done with it in a few weeks. I will then forward to the next member on the waiting list.

Where is the European stencil?
-
Its in my shed. No one seemed to want it. If anybody does let me know.

We are prepping to paint the hubcaps now.
Got the correct stencil from Authentic Classics.
When we place it over the hubcap center it does not fit flush all over. The exterior circle fits snug but in the center the stencil sits maybe 1/4 inch above the center and I have to apply pressure and push down so that the center of the stencil touches the center star. Is this correct? If so how do I hold down the stencil so it abuts everywhere while painting?
Just pushing down by hand while painting is shaky. I fear the stencil will move.
Has anyone experienced this?
Is the stencil mis-formed?
thanks,
jz

Mount a pin upright in the center of the template, with a weight on top which holds template down

Got it thank you Hans.

I think I used a heat gun to massage the plastic stencel to fit better. Attempt at your own risk though.
-
I tried to use the rigid one with no luck.
Then I used the soft rubber (silicone ???) two piece for the late wheel covers and all was great.
I recommend using the soft rubber stencils.
-
No luck gentlemen we couldn't get the rigid plastic stencil to work, so we taped the hubcaps.
A bit of work but they turned out great.

Mine has “gone missing”.
I’d like to nominate myself as custodian of the European stencil.
-
Any seconders?
-
Colin.
we will note you are the custodian for Europe..
Garry
Custodian for Australia
-
Thank you Garry,
Scott, please send the stencil to me.
Colin.

Sure, I wouldn't mind getting mine done whilst Ive go the stencil even though Im a way off getting the car painted. I'll talk to my painter and see if he is up for doing the hubcaps now. If he is I'll send you the full size one first and then the smaller one once mine are done.
If not I'll send you them both now. Be annoying to need it and it be on loan to someone...
-
Sure, get yours done and then send them.
Does the club stencil have the outer ring piece too? (no jokes!..........)
-
For the record,
I am not as yet the custodian of these.
-
Another "For the record".
I do not have the stencils but I have learned that they were in any case after-market silicone ones whereas I thought they were the original Mercedes tools.
In the light of this and the fact that I have not received them I should no longer be considered custodian of these tools.
If an when I manage to find an original MB set again I will make them available for hire to group members.

How do I get a position on the waiting list for the dog dish stencil?

I still have the stencil but should be done within a month. When I painted mine in November the new paint highlighted how the chrome needed refinishing. I looked at numerous options starting with polishing seeing the sticker shock of what new hub caps run. After a lot of research I just ordered new chrome caps from Classic center supposedly on a January sale for a little over $1,300. That wasn't in my budget. Anyways I shoudl be doen with the stencil as soon as we get a 40 degree day to paint. I am PM'ing the next in line to see if they still need the stencil.

Hi Garry,
How do I get access to the stencils for my 230SL? I regularly visit Sydney.
Cheers
Paul

Paul,
The last time i think it was used was by a member in Sydney, Philip, known on forum as PIP1947. I have not seen a request since.
I have sent him an email asking where it went to from him. When i hear i will let you know.

Just buy the plastic one. Not expensive and works great.
