Title: Very original 1966 230SL at Chequered Flag
Post by: perry113 on December 15, 2019, 01:33:42
I took notice of what appears to be an incredibly original survivor 1966 230SL at Chequered Flag.

This is an excellent reference 230SL.

Beautiful original interior.

I am not trying to promote the sale of this car. I am trying to share the photos for forum members who are interested in very original examples for reference.

Very striking color combo too.

Thanks Peter, that's a great set of reference photos! I downloaded them all. (just wish there had been some of the undercarriage)
The car looks just right - nice to see how good the factory body gaps were. It must have spent it's whole life undercover for the steering wheel and tex to look that good.
A surprisingly reasonable price!

Chequered Flag is within walking distance from me, so if anyone wants me to go have a look at this car in person, just let me know.

Here is another excellent reference car. This car is actually 3 numbers away from my Light Ivory 1965 230SL.
Very low mileage and all original.
Very few and far between all original 230SL's indeed.

I am not so sure about all original. i can see a few things not quite right in the engine bay area.

That's a 17000 mile car.
What do you see that is not quite right?
Please elaborate.

If we're talking about the second link, the center console carpet and seat belts are not original for starters.  Miles have nothing to do with originality.

And, boy, that's some ratted up carpet on the door sills.  Firewall pad appears to attest to a bit of a rough life too.

The breather tube cad and painting combined? 5 stickers on over flow tank? Firewall pad like that on 17,000 miles yet it has good cad plating, wow. A question on hood latch with radio copper suppression on an early 230, i thought they came in on later cars. What is the other thing hanging off the alternate water bottle bracket?

Then again i stand to be corrected as i have a rhd Euro delivered car that has things differently.

As the experts say, unless you can show me the documented service papers, with receipts for the milage then you can only assume it has been around the clock at least once.

Didn't realize the standard was so high on this forum.

For reference here is a post from one of our fellow forum member "Tempur" who became the second owner of 1965 car that is 3 numbers away from my Light Ivory car.

When some one says "all original" you can leave some slack when it comes to "all original metal, mainly original interior, original seat covers, all original paint. It may not be a "museum quality standard" that you refer to as "all original".

This appears to be a very original and what I would call far above average. And I would bet this car was more original then both my 2 cars and yours and Garry's car.

Frankly I find it hard to find cars as mainly original as both of the cars I shared on this thread.

Peter,

Standards become super super high only when someone mentions that an engine bay is original or restored to original specs.  We all strive for this to some degree.  I tried  to get my engine bay as original as i could within a reasonable price but do not suggest that it is enough that others use it as a reference as the only ones i trust for originality are those that have been owned from new such as John and Ralph on this forum who’s engine bay photos can be considered the absolute best resources for originality.

I personally appreciate what some might consider “picky” comments.  This is precisely part of my learning experience here.  I’ll admit sometimes it might seem a tad bit brutal, but I’m convinced that’s not the intention and it has certainly helped shape my fledgling knowledge of all things w113.
