Absent Tool Kit
« on: March 23, 2009, 13:46:28 »

When I bought my RHD 66 230sl last year there was no toolkit. Or radio for that matter, but I am promised that is on the way! I have looked thru forum and manual and fleabay, and my question is can anyone recommend a good repro tool kit supplier? Should I just stump up the 200-odd euro for the MB item? I am in Ireland so prefer a UK or continental supplier. While I am asking, are there any other tools a novice should have in the garage?

Its sunny in Ireland, yesterday it was warm and sunny, and on Saturday the Irish won the Grand Slam after 61 years. Lucky streak or what ;D

Box wrench set and spanners in metric, computer, internet connection, sl113.org bookmark, telephone with Ja17 and BenzDr on speed-dial, mini-fridge stocked with German lager, etc, etc.

Oh, and as a last resort, a spare pagoda.  ;D

The 200 euro MB kit is not recommendedd unless you buy it from me!
You will end up with a kit similar to many on ebay which come from later cars with a rag tool roll and some cheapo wrenches.

For a good reproduction toolkit I would buy one from a 107 car instead of aftermarket (450 SL 1972 - 198x).   They should be comparitively cheap.

A fairly ratty one just went for $US 160 on ebay today. It was not complete and the bag and wrenches had a fair share of rust stains. I also caution on the ebayers that claim "original 230-250-280SL" etc. etc.etc. There are a number of pictures on the site to help you with the complete kit. One of the more difficult items to get is the wood handled screwdriver. The water pump pliers and regular pliers are fairly easy, and are common across a wide range of models.

You also need those really neat fuse pliers, they are made from actual hens teeth whereas the wood handled screw driver is only made from repro hens teeth. And don't forget the cheesy little plastic box full of fuses

Hi,

Here's a pretty nice looking repro tool kit on eBay,

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/STUNNING-MERCEDES-230-250-280SL-COGNAC-COLOR-TOOL-KIT_W0QQitemZ170313149178QQcmdZViewItemQQptZMotors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories?hash=item170313149178&_trksid=p4506.c0.m245&_trkparms=65:10|39:1|240:1318#ht_8689wt_946

Same seller has an original kit as well. None of them contain the wooden screwdriver though. As already mentioned  they are pretty hard to come by and if in good shape are usually pretty costly.

I obtained a decent wood handle screwdriver with a crappy 280 S toolkit.  I also got these strange plastic fuse pullers.
I thought that the OP wanted a toolkit for the car.  I didn't know when he said "reproduction" that he meant one reproduced to look like a proper SL toolkit.  A proper SL toolkit looks tattered and rusty and is missing things.  A reproduction toolkit looks nothing like that!

I'm amazed at the prices these tool kits are being offered for these days, I bought one last year for less then one third what the offer price is and on these and thought that was a lot. Prices on the complete cars seem to be going down and the parts keep going up.

Yes, "repro" was the wrong word to use. All I really wanted to have was a set that more or less matched the original offering. At the prices, and given how little I know about my car, I don't care if it comes in folding-singing bag redolent with stories.

As for the natty fuse pliers, I think the circa 1995 miniature Iberia wooden clothes peg that came with the business class napkin will do the trick! I'm printing the list from the manual and seeing if anything cheap pops up from an R107

I would jump on an original toolkit at an original(ish)price, but if it isn't  happening during the credit crunch, it ain't gonna happen. Those of you that have original tool kits are very lucky!

Lucky streak continues- went out to buy a new car for the wife and came home without one (car, that is  ;))

Those of us with an original toolkit and a FLASHLIGHT are liuckier still if our cars breakdown.  I like the wooden clothes peg as a fuse remover -- sounds good.  And I have to ask --- what type of car are you buying for your wife?

Welcome.

Probably the most difficult thing (after the cool fuse pliers - there are two styles by the way, one with the little spring balls in the interior of the handle and one just like a regular set of pliers - both in plastic, and the wood handle for the screw driver) is to get a proper bag, as these were specific to the 113 (and the 111/112 I think)

The water pump pliers can be ordered from Samstag (and they even have the MB star), the wrenches, regular pliers, wheel mounting peg, lug wrench and spark plug wrench were common across all the product lines and are reasonably easy to find on ebay or similar, just need a little patience. Samstag used to have the small box of fuses (with the 25Ω stubby fuses). I had to complete my tool kit some years back and got 'em all.

I have seen the plastic fuse pliers on ebay for around $75, but that has probably been six months ago.

Reminds me of a guy I met recently. He looked very down and I asked him: "what's up, lost a fortune in the crisis?". He responded: "no, this is the worst I've ever seen. It's far worse than a divorce". I asked him how that was. He said: "I've lost half my money all the same, but I still have my wife....".

Naj:
I did not  know you sell tool kits kits for the W113 Pagoda SL ? Please PM me so we can make contact and hook up . I am looking for another took kit more correct that what  I have. I have pictures of the tool bag with the Mercedes-Benz logo stamped in side the green cloth material . I know that made the out side of the pouch with either left over soft top material or MB TeX. I have a description many years old of each tool and its manufacture inside the kit. I missed out on buying that kit while I had a chance it was band new ina navy blue canvanvas pouch with ever tool in mint condition.

I do not know about the wooden screw driver. I though it was plastic handle once the 300SL was discontinued  the wooden handle screw drivers I though dispaired. I think I saw adds for reproduction wooden handle screw drivers many years ago in the Star magazine for the 190SL and 300SL group. they were very expensive I would not want to  user it in fear of damaging it .

Please get back to me great to hear you are a source.
