The 1971280SL I currently own was in the 1986 movie "Dress Grey" starring Alec Baldwin and Lloyd Bridges.
The movie was filmed in Roswell,New Mexico.

A little bit off the main topic...

During a recent trip to India, I spotted a rather nice looking pagoda in a TV advert for HipHop Sunglasses.
Appears to be a red 280SL with whitewall tires and most of the advert is centered around the car.

Was quite refreshing considering that one does not often see any old Mercs in India in general...

I know this movie has been mentioned before but we rented "Two for the Road" last night and I highly recommend it to those who have never seen it. I first saw the movie when it was released back in 1967 and didn't realize at the time that a 230SL was one of the "stars" (along with Audrey Hepburn and Albert Finney). Needless to say I loved the movie and when I came out to my white 250 SL (my 280 SL's predecessor) after the movie, there were a group of people gathered around the car. I think they were a little disappointed when Audrey or Albert didn't show up :) The movie is a little dated (aren't we all) but still fun to see our favorite car on display.

I like seeing old movies with cars that appear to be new. At that point in time, they were new. I don't like seeing movies where these "new" cars get destroyed. I saw an old movie a while back where they rolled a 1960 300d Adenauer. Made me sick. And then there's the Witches of Eastwick movie where Jack Nicholson destroys a 600. They used 5 or 6 different cars in that film, and crashed the wrong one!! I got to go inspect the car and write an estimate on it. Dang that was a long time ago...

Watching a made for TV movie on HBO called "Cinema Verite" and at about the 45 minute mark there is a nice shot of the two stars, Tim Robbins and James Gandolfini, driving down the California coast in a blue 280SL. Several more scenes show the car through out the rest of the movie.

Yes I saw Cinema Verite as well and a Pagoda is featured.  The movie is about the making of the first "reality" tv show, the PBS documentary about the Loud family back in the 70's.  The sl is featured to the extent that in one scene after Robbins character has been kicked out of the house he is speaking to one of the kids on the phone and asks if "Mom has been driving the Mercedes?"

2 sightings in a single evening on UK TV this week. First in a new Walkers Crisps advert featuring Gary Lineker & Elle MacPherson - the car shot is right at the end. Enjoy!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mwCpufrXdZM

Then I caught my teenage daughter watching 90210 and saw that one of the characters 'Teddy Montgomery' drives a very nice green 280SL. Helped my cool index go uo a bit in her eyes. On the other hand he is an openly gay character so maybe I don't want to push that comparison too far ....

Elle McPherson....

Walkers crisps (Lays) have just reintroduced Ruffles (under a new name:Crinkles) with their normal[ahem] panache...

In this one our hero leaves his beloved for his potato snack and his beloved trashes their house and storms out in a silver Pagoda all to the soundtrack of "groovy kind of love"

Now you guys have me doing it. . . in the 2010 film "All Good Things," the rich family drives a Mercedes or 3. There's one shot of the parking area in front of the family's mansion with a Pagoda parked there. Dark colour, top down. This occurs about 30 minutes into the film. Sadly, can't say I enjoyed the rest of the film, but hoping to catch another glimpse of the Pagoda at least kept me awake.

I don't know when this episode of Top Gear was produced but I had not seen it before.

Sorry if this is a repeat...

If the link doesn't get you to the 280 SL review right after the first 30 second commercial and a brief lead in to the program I suggest you copy and paste the link to see the 280 SL piece.

Back in the day.... I remember getting that recorded by a friend and burned onto 3 DVDs which were then shared (and passed on snail-mail) with folk on here. Now we have Youtube... Technology: I can't keep up with it :-\

My trip to work takes me past Chelsea Cars every day and they have a less than stellar reputation among the car clubs...

On a plane yesterday I picked up a magazine and found an ad for Wempe (ask your other half) which had two models sitting in a silver 280 (I think...) in front of the Brandenburg Gate

Looks like a Pagoda will see some action in the remake of "Tinker, tailor, soldier, spy".
Only a couple of seconds on this trailer about 50 seconds in,

Last night, on the television CBS Police drama "Blue Bloods", the police enter a "Brooklyn chop shop" and lo and behold--a great view of the "280 SL" badge on screen.  I guess it was supposed to be a car in for "chopping".  Quite unusual...except for Tom Collitt whose Pagodas have visited chop shops many times, I think...

Blue Bloods is filmed in New York City.

Probably among the most obscure yet. Page 60 of the latest Esquire Magazine(November 2011 Rihanna cover) Under  visual rule #126 there is a drawing of a couple watching leaves from a 113.

Does anyone watch 'Blue Bloods' with Tom Seleck?

This past week near the end of the show they commented on some bad guys
keeping something in an old convertible stored in a warehouse someplace.  Well
the two cops go to search the place an the convertible is a 280sl all covered in dust.

Not much on air time but pretty cool.
