Title: 1970 280 SL for sale in Los Angeles asking price $39K
Post by: Cees Klumper on October 15, 2020, 22:11:24
This popped up on local Craigslist today, doesn't look bad and not a very high asking price. No connection to seller:

Reported as spam.

Funny about that and that is one of the reasons that posting cross references to other unknown sellers listings is not a good idea.

I didn't know there was a rule against this? Last time I did this, a fellow member here ended up buying that Pagoda and thanking me for the tip. This one was probably sold really quick due to the low price. Oh well.

No rule against doing it, but there have been a few like this recently that have been reported as a scam just as this one was reported yesterday to the moderators.

I think as the prices have risen, so have the number of scam sales of Pagodas risen proportionately. One of our members, Jimmy, nearly got burnt with one out of south east asia.

Thanks for posting a link to the Pagoda on CL Cees!
It didn't look like an obvious scam to me (ad text and pictures seemed legit) but glad to hear it has been flagged and nobody got burned.

Thanks, I bought 3 cars and 3 motorcycles off Craigslist ads just like this one without any issue whatsoever. Had I been in the market for a Pagoda I would have certainly called on this one because, as you say, it seemed legit enough to check out. Of course, buyer beware and all that but that goes for all ads/platforms, so I still don't get what the issue was with me posting the link yesterday. I do think this was a real sale and that it sold within a couple of hours. Just like I sold my BNW G310R motorcycle within hours on CL, back in February, for my asking price to a very nice young local couple. Everybody happy. I don't know why someone would have flagged this ad as 'spam', it certainly was not that. It might have been a non-legitimate offer, but certainly it was not spam. (BTW I happen to be a fraud investigator, google Klumper the repo man)

Cees,

I don’t think anyone flagged it as spam?  It apparently turned out to be a scam. Just saying.

Gary, in your first reply you said yourself it was reported as spam. And how do we know it was in fact a scam? Says who?

Hi Garry,
The car shows as deleted by owner which typically means the car was sold or taken of market by the person who advertised it (other reasons are possible as well, received a deposit or changed mind?). A CL ad that is flagged will say so when you click on the link. If you look in CL help section you can find a more in depth explanation on that.
If you received request to moderate the link from a forum member they might have reached out to the seller and received a fishy looking email from the seller. We can't know that for sure because we have not seen that email.
Those are the possibilties as I see them. In any event, our little Pagoda community seems to work as inteded which is great.
Happy Hunting!
