Title: IP timing for the 230 SL
Post by: 230SL on July 13, 2015, 16:16:17
I managed to free my seized IP ( no explanation yet for the terrible noise ) and have read with much interest mrfatboy's article (How to ) tell if your IP is installed correctly.  My pump shows the alignment marks as shown in his fig. 1 i.e. under the left-hand upper flange bolt BUT : I have a workshop manual by Kenneth Ball / AutoPress Ltd. and an official Mercedes workshop manual which both show the alignment mark 90 Degrees off under the upper right-hand flange bolt. I am enclosing copy of the MB manual where you can see the different position of the mark. Is it possible that early 230 SL pumps are different from the later 250 SL / 280 SL pumps?
Thank you for your explanations, Kay-Michael Gerken, Santo Domingo / Costa Rica(http://)

I never ran into this before, but it might be possible?  Dan, Stick, Chuck any comments?

We've been talking about assembly options recently and it seems that everyone would agree that you should put everything back together the way it came apart. Or should you? What if someone put it together bass-ackwards before you got there?

Do you think Stick should put those con rods back in the way he found them?  ;)

I would be inclined to install the pump with the timing marks in the upper left quadrent regardless of where some ''pump builder '' installed it. There are quite a few different pumps used on 113's but they all have basic componets which are the same.

Anything is possible, especially if you have MB documentation like that.

I've never seen a pump with marks in that position, but if I was installing one like that, I would line up the marks that were there.

Thanks Chuck,

I will then have to check the timing of the IP. I have found a procedure on the forum, written by Joe Alexander.

I will try that tomorrow:

QUOTE:
I do have a method by which you can check without taking the injection pump off. You would need to unscrew some injection lines and remove one fitting and check valve in the pump to do the check.

Unhook the three rear injection lines. Remove the injection pump #4 19mm fitting (third from rear). Remove the check valve in the injection pump. You can now feel the position of the #4 plunger (piston) in the pump using a nail or such. When the engine is at 12 degrees ATDC (after top dead center of #1 cylinder)on the compression stroke (#1 cam lobes upward ), the plunger in the pump should be near the top of it's stroke. You can feel it travel upwared and downward as you turn the engine by hand. When it reaches the top of its stroke check the crankshaft timing.  During re-assembly be sure not to overtighten the 19mm fitting. 18 ft. lbs is the specified torque.

UNQUOTE

I am just not sure what the 'check valve' is that I have to remove, but I hope it will be obvious tomorrow when I try this.

thanks guys!

The explanation is, Kay-Michael is reading workshop documentation valid for 2valve (two-plunger) FI pumps,  220 SEb and early 300SE.
These have their install markings in upper right sector.
