Square Exhaust Tips - They Look Great, I Think
« on: August 21, 2023, 11:40:20 »
Realizing this may sound funny to many - I was, actually, amazed myself how nice the squared off tips look when you fit them in place. The area now looks more tidy than before. The squared off tips look like indeed someone put some touch into them rather than left them just finished round in a standard way...

I would like to admit they are not expensive enough to trigger the process of post purchase re-rationalization, they just look like someone really demonstrated lots of attention to detail while designing them. Such a tiny item, but to me it makes a difference...

As for how far they stick out - I measured the old tip made sure there is the same distance. The muffler is original, fits the body where the rubber bumper is and the tips had cut outs determining how deep they can go, I just left the distance as it was.

They do look amazing!  I actually bought two sets.  One for the car and another just as back up in case they become NLA in the future.  Their quality is wonderful and the price fair (~$60/tip).  Somewhere I read they were made by the same company that produced them for the 356 Porsche as OEM.  If that’s the case, they may have produced them for DBAG as well?

They do look great, Pawel. As does all the chrome parts in your pic.

I purchased mine from Pelican Parts. I had a coupon that I applied to the purchase. They run these specials seemingly all the time.  No charge for shipping since it’s over their minimum amount.

Thanks żak!

I registered in que with the UK supplier mentioned here on the forum.

Then I spotted them at Pelican Parts, so I bought them.

The next day I was notified by the UK supplier that they are available, I could not help, bought them too…

They are indeed well manufactured. Brass, I think, you see when you cut out bits so that they fit the muffler cross-member. Slightly shorter than the Mercedes ones. They have the indentations that are holding them to pipes in the back. The Mercedes had them closer to front, making them easier to remove.

I have a 1970 300SEL 3.5 that we purchased new from the dealer and I don't remember it having square exhaust tips.  Were they only on the 113 or were they square on other models as well?

They were available on other models of the period. I messed up once and bought one that turned out to be just too large for the Pagoda. I gave it to a friend with a 108 car.

I see just one PN change for these tips from A 113 492 0114 to A 113 493 0214 for all W113 variants. I cannot tell what was the change and when it happened. One would have to look at paper parts list from certain time to determine "when". What was the change (was it squaring the edge?) is another story.

In any case, the first part number is used only for W113. The second one was used also on some variants of W108, W109, W111, W112 and W114.

Well, Pawel,
Almost .... ;)
All W113's with the exception of the early about 400 (1963) 230SLs were fitted with the A113 492 0214 with the squared-off exhaust ends, and this original design was (MB supplier-wise) replaced by the (penny-wise cheaper to produce) round rolled lips sometime in the early 1990ies but still keeping the parts number A113 492 0214.

Early 230 SLs (up to 000419 or so) had the A113 492 0114 tips - with rounded-off tips and being shorter than the later 0214.
You can "see" these only on very selected early factory pictures.

-  Today absolutely unobtainium.

I recently bought a set of the squared tips from Pelican for my 113 for installation when I return to USA. My more recently acquired 108 came to me with no tips.  I will try the squared tips on the 108 also and if they fit, I plan to buy a second set for that car.

Thank you!

So what you are saying is that the first PN 0114 was shorter tip with rounded edge, then at 0419 was replaced with 0214 with squared edge and longer. Then squared edge was replaced by rounded edge again for cost reasons, but without change of the part number.

So now it is clear, thank you!

Great information. WHat part number did you use at Pelican Parts. I couldn't seem to locate them under 113 or Porsche 356 models.

Dumb question, but are these just pressure fit over the exhaust pipes?  I see that my car does not have the raised edge detail (rounded or square) at the end of the pipes.

Yes, they are just pressure fit. They have detents that hold them tight. They need to have a cut out in their rear part to accommodate the cross bracket on pipes.

What's the preferred method for removing the ones on the car for years?

I hammered mine off, they came off easily, but they were not there for too many years. Well, it is a topic...

It has been discussed on this forum, e.g. here: https://www.sl113.org/forums/index.php?topic=35058.msg256413#msg256413

Thanks, that discussion is more of how to save the chrome tips and replace the exhaust.  This is the opposite, keep the exhaust, replace the tips.

I tried knocking them off with a wooden block and hammer, as well as a punch and hammer.  Won't budge.  We'll see if some heat and/or penetrant does the trick.  If all fails, so be it, not that important.

I used the sharp edge of one hammer insted of a piece of wood. Did not damage a lot.

I was ready to use angle grinder to cut the tips alongside if need be.

Presumably this is not a job to be done 'in situ', and requires some partial disassembly of the pipes? Need to check if my system was welded before it was fitted!

Well, my job needs to be done in situ as my entire exhaust system is welded as they originally were.  There was no way my tips were coming off with force.  So, on to plan B, a Dremel with a cutting disk, or, in my case, four.  Sliced through the chrome tip, spread with a screwdriver and off they came.  I did a better job on the second tip than the first, narrower slice, but no damage to the steel exhaust pipes, just be careful.

Naturally, there was surface rust between the tip and exhaust, nature's best glue.  I sanded it fairly smooth and tried installing a new tip, but after the first indent, things were really getting tight.  I didn't want to get halfway on and get stuck, so I pounded it off with a wooden block and hammer.  I'll clean up the rusty exhaust tips more and am considering coating them with anti-seize to aid in installation.  The new chrome tips are a perfect diameter and slide on with relative ease until the detent.  It should get more difficult, of course, but I sensed it was a bit too tight. Also, I will not need to make any cutouts on the new chrome tips, they are only a touch longer than the rounded ones (1/2"?) but plenty of room before any obstacles.  You can see in the pic of the exhaust.

More to come.
