1969 rear axle split bellows

I am about to install a split bellows on my 1969 280 SL rear axle. I have the Haynes manual and it seems to give an adequate description of the instillation but I thought if someone had successfully installed one they might have a few tips they would be willing to share that would be greatly appreciated. Two or three things.
1 ) keep the split at the back and horizontal or in line with the axel tube.
2) you don't need sealer but it can't hurt
3) use staples on both the inner and out folds of the bellows

4 ) the most important one. Many of the clamp kits don't fit right. The small one is fine but the large one is too long and won't pull down tightly enough. I cut the end off with the hole in it right where it turns up at 90 degrees to the main strap. I copy the original profile bending it like the original piece.
 You will need to drill a hole in the strap for the screw to go through and then mount it on the axel as usual. The 10 - 12 mm difference in over all lenght is just enough to keep the boot tight and prevent leaking. It WILL leak if you don't do this.

Try fitting the clamp first just in case you have one that's the right size.
