Title: 230SL 1964 running rich
Post by: AMM on June 25, 2023, 21:59:55
Hi

Recently acquired 1964 SL running very rich.

I have taken apart the WRD which was seized in hot position and it now works as it should I think. Sucks cold air till it warms up then stops.

Csv doesn't appear to be leaking.Took it apart and gave it a clean.

New plugs are black after running for a short period ( up to temp.)

Car idles at 550rpm and sound like it is misfiring. Was about to buy a new distributor and rotor and leads to exclude that but found out that I have a 0231116051 distributor that is a vacuum retard version. My car I think should have a vacuum retard one since the vacuum line is on top of the throttle body?? (as per some other posts here).

Could this be the cause of the issues?

Looking closey my head says 250 on it so it may have had a new head at some port from a 2.5 engine.

Do I change the distributor for the correct one or the throttle body to match the vacuum retard one fitted?

Thanks in advance.

Sorry I meant I think I should have a vacuum advance distributor not a retard one as I have on the car.

I believe the 051 is the correct distributor.   See here

Was this car sitting for a long period of time?  Fuel injectors could need cleaning/replacing, Fuel Injection pump may need adjustment.  These plus linkage ajustment would be the first things to check.
