Question on Engine Mount Parts
« on: February 20, 2012, 21:50:40 »
Thinking of changing engine mounts, Appreciate if anyone can help me on following questions:

(1) I see there are Karlyn and Meyle parts, which one is prefered, or any other brand is preferred?
(2) Should I just buy the rubber mounts and reuse the other parts, like bolts, spacers or I need the full kits?

Thanks

Eric

I just changed the motor mounts on my 280 SL. I opted for the original MB kit, two motor mounts, the Allen head bolts - 2 for each mount, and new rubber bumpers for the underside of the mount. The spacers (that are directly under the mounts) were not in the kit I bought. I believe many times these are just left out when the motor mounts are re-installed. There are several strings on the forum about them. You can see that with the search engine; use "motor mount" and search only the topic line.

I re-used the bolts that go through the strut from the engine and screw into the very top of the mount. They were in excellent condition so I saw no need to change.

It took me about 2.5 hours to do the drivers side, and a little over an hour to do the passenger side.

Whatever you buy do not get the Karlyn mounts - there is a reason why they are the cheapest.
I went with Febi-Bilstein.  See: http://www.sl113.org/forums/index.php?topic=14056.0

Meyle is a respected maker of rubber bits as is Billstien.  Most German cars have mounts and rubber parts by Meyle, Billstien or Lemforder. If you do a Google search of Karlyn rubber mounts I think you will get the picture.

My 280 project had no motor mount parts, so I had to piece the whole thing together.

You can get the equivalent of the MB rebuild kit by buying the Meyle/Febi mounts and then the bushings from the ATVM (Maryland) web site for $17 each.  Mercedes sells the top bolts for $2.96 each.

Be careful of the other parts.  The plates are $64 each and the underneath bolts are $50 each.
