fuel vapor tank hookup
« on: December 01, 2006, 03:15:18 »
In my 280sl, there are two thin tubes that come up from the floor of the trunk on the driver's side.  They connect to two hoses that connect to a small round black thing; another hose comes out of the other end of the round black thing and connects to the vapor tank.  There's a diagram from BlairWag at http://www.sl113.org/forums/uploaded/blairwag/2004511232246_possiblefix.jpg . The The round black thing is on the top right of the picture.

My question is this: does it matter which one of the twho tubes from the floor of the trunk goes to which input on the black thing?  Mine got disconnected, and I need to hook them up again.

I think that mine came off when I had the quarter panel on that side repaired.  I don't think that the body shop guys knew what to do with the tank stuff.

Also, by the way, where do those two little tubes go?  To the intake manifold?

Thanks,

Bruce

Thanks for the pic.  It's pretty blurry when I look at it, though -- can't really read the text.  Maybe you could upload one that's not so compressed?

Also, does the little black thing replace the 'flower pot' on the later 280sl's, or do we still have a flower pot?

Thanks, that's a lot clearer.  I also took a look at blairwag's picture on a better monitor, and I was able to distinguish the two tubes as they went into the valve unit, so I should be OK as long as his hookup is correct.  As I see it, if you look down on the valve unit with the tube to the vapor tank on top and pointing toward you (like in Blair's picture), then the right tube goes to the inner line on on the trunk (manifold), and the left line goes to the outer line in the trunk.

From your diagram, it looks like if I were to suck on the line that goes to the vapor tank, then I'd feel a little suction from the line that's supposed to go to the outside vent (the outer line).  I'll see if I can verify this if I can do it without messing up any of the tubes.
