Hi,
Does anyone know what purpose this bracket (at bottom of the trunk area, just under the opening for the left number plate light) serves in a late 1968 US specs 280SL?

To fix the items in the trunk.

Together with some leather straps, with a pin, that would fit the bracket.

Thanks. Clear now.

It holds a leather like strap that was used to keep custom luggage in place. Typically the trunk held a large and medium sized suitcases as well as a make-up kit. On the opposite side of the trunk is another such bracket. Pictures of it are shown in the tech manual section.

The upper one here.

Thank you Pawel. Always some new detail to learn!

Pawel:
Never knew about these strap holders.
Neat idea.
Are they available , or do you make your own.
Seems simple enough to make.

It is not mine, the one that is on the picture. The picture is from here: https://www.sl113.org/forums/index.php?topic=25618.0
Mine looks more like the one on the red background. I bought mine from someone who offered them on fb - very well reproduced in my opinion. I cannot find it now.
Lots of posts about it:

I wondered the same thing and tried to see if the ratchet handle for the jack would fit in there. It does. I used to keep it inside the spare tire cover well but I'm going to see how leaving it under the bracket works out. I don't have any luggage to tie down

The blue one is mine. I made it from two cheap Canadian Tire belts. The stitches are gone (ugly) and a new blue belt with luggage upholstery rivets have replaced it.
