For those of use still searching for the proper wheel hanging tool that stored into the spare tire rap when changing a tire for our W113 SLs and has long disappeared . Snap-on tool company has introdued a 12 MM copy to duplicate this tool.Part #WHM-1 thread size M12/1.5 Hex size 10 MM. I miked mine to check thread size of the orginal part where it threads into the wheeel flange. The kit is sold as two or one and closely matches the orginal Mercedes-Benz part chrome with an end that can be accesed by a wrench to snug in and out .

Because I grew up working on Benzes, when I went to work at a GM dealership, I had a hard time learning to slide the wheels onto the studs because I was so used to the European style bolt on wheels.

I keep the wheel stud tool in the trunk in it's little pocket in the tire cover, but I never use it.

I have an early 230sl (#1515) and the wheel tool is a pin (no threads)and it works quite well and fits neatly into the holder in the trunk. It appears to be original to the car: does anyone else have the threadless type wheel tool?

You can make one from a bolt. Cut the head off. Below a pic of what the original looks like

Interesting location for tool holders. I've not seen any tool holders on the rear of the trunk before (I can see the tail light assembly in one picture). Is that an owner add-on, or is that normal for an early 230SL?

Hey Rodd. I have the tool clips as well so it may indeed have been an "early" thing. (I think I see the corner of a vertical spare in Steve's pic? -- that could be the common denominator for the clips).

Now, the pin was news to me. Mine is obviously long gone. I have the lug wrench but an empty pin holder! Funny how you can go years without even knowing you are missing something -- and now it bugs me.

Here are some pix of the trunk tool setup. Please let me know if I've stowed them incorrectly, they were not in the trunk when I bought the car but they are supposedly original to this vehicle and this seemed like the appropriate layout (i.e., they fit in these brackets without bending anything!)

I also included a better picture of the pin.

(excuse #1: the trunk is not as bad as it looks, all the metal is solid but the paint is scratched up a bit, I've been working to clean out the surface rust but it's slow going!)

Hello,

If your lucky you can often find one of these still in the plastic holder in the trunk of a Mercedes W108 sedan of the era.
I've snagged many of these before the sedan hulks went to the crusher.

Hey Steve, the trunk looks pretty good to me. A little paint and you are there. By the way, I think you also have the correct jack (maybe Achim can confirm). Apparently I ended up with a different one as mine is a little different. Question: is your trunk mat a brown color or is it just the lighting? It seems also to be in good shape. Hard to find those.

The mat is a light brown/tan color. I've attached a photo of the entire mat. The passenger floor mat is the same color and in good shape as well, the driver's side mat didn't make it through the years, I still have it but it is in three pieces and quite worn out.

Gentlemen,

My 230sl is also an early 1964 model (chassis no 002525) and have the same tool clips, setup and upright spare wheel as the pictures that Steve posted.

My wheel pin is also unthreaded and of a simple design.

The jack in Steve's pics is the correct early type jack. It has a seperate ratchet handle. Unfortunately mine is missing[

Yes, this is what I am also aware of. Steve's jack is correct. These ones can be found with other period Mercedes cars as well.

However, Steve's wheel alignment pin looks strange, almost handmade; I have never seen that before. To me only the one shown by theengineer is correct but may be I am wrong here. The factory spare part literature do not list different ones as far as I remember. :x

Brown/tan trunk mat? That's also strange.[:0] I believed they were always grey. I know that the floorwell rubber mats were also brownish for beige & brown interior colors, but the trunk mat?
Steve, you have interior code 116, that's dark grey-anthracite (almost black) MB tex; that shouldn't come with bronish floor mats but dark grey ones. Very strange. Do the mats look bronish with daylight as well?

Thanks for the info. The floor mats are also the "off-brown" color in both full-spectrum (i.e., sunlight) and incandenscent lighting. Perhaps the original owner swapped them out but I can't imagine why. I'm the second owner of the car and everything in the car seems to be original, not necessarily in factory condition but original nonetheless. I've stored away the original floor mats and replaced them with new black ones (to go with the new gray/black carpeting.) Alas, the original carpeting was completely shot, as you can imagine, and no one makes the correct 116 carpeting anymore.

Do you (or anyone) have a picture of the gray mats that came in the early models?

Just a thought, but I think that the original gray rubber trunk matting may simply turn brown with age, perhaps due to "cooking" in the trunk (and exposure to gasoline fumes?).
