So, I was working on the car this weekend, and happend to look in the front drivers wheel well and saw what looked likt a leaf or something stuck up there.

reached up and felt what seemed like tape, gave it a pull and sure enough there was a lenght of tape.

I guess it was covering where the wheel well, fender came together.
now instead of what appeard was one smooth arch I can see where the metal sections are joined together.

my question is , should I put new tape there? is there a cover missing? I looked at all the photos I could find and didn't find any that showed me that upper wheel well area.

just want to make sure I fix this correctly

no this is not the spash guard, the tape was covering the mating areas above the wheel well and the front fender.
imagine looking at the front shock in the wheel well up top. then looking toward the engine bay I can now see the mating of the wheel well, front panel and whatever constitutes the side wall of the engine bay.

Naj,
yes! looking at the last photo, you can see where the fender curvs back down on the inside, and mates up to a boxy item.

on my car the tape continued the curve from the fender down to the wheel well. thus the area was "smooth"

guess the tape was not supposed to be there?

Was the tape right under the box section ("A") or down lower ("B")?

Rodd,
The tape is about 5' wide, so it covered A and went up and mated with the fender where it mates with the box section at A

Is this normal?

The tape is not original. My guess is that someone put it there to stop moisture holding debris from collecting atop the longitudinal box section (a). I have seen rust start there.

You would not believe how much dirt & grime were packed into that small space above the box section on my car when I bought it. I highly recommend that everyone check this area on their car if they have not done so in the past.

I concurr with Rodd on this being one of the weak spots of the SL.
I have seen my share of rust and nasty accumulations of dirt/mud/ rust/ bondo/ and whatnot packed into this area. How does one clean it out? Me: a wire brush to break up the big hard encrustations and then a water hose with a trigger nozzle on the end to give more pressure to wash it all clean.
I usually do the high pressure wash underneath and in the wheel wells on every car right after a run in the salt roads(winter) and puddles (rest of year). I am continually amazed at the stuff that washes out from under the crevices. Another area to clean out real well on the SL in addition to the underside and wells is the panel between the tank and license plate panel. Many cars had rust bubbles forming in this panel.

The area on top of that box section is hard to see, so if you inspect by feel, wear gloves. If there is significant rust there and you don't protect your fingers, you may shred them.

OK,

Another 'underbody question' ...

My car has a hole through the floor pan behind the right hand side seat. The hole is in the centre of what would be the foot well for the rear seat passengers if there was room so I figure it is not seat belt related.

From below this hole is close to the outside rubber exhaust mount ring.
Something has either been removed or fallen out.

I don't remember seeing this hole previously.

Any clues as to what this hole was used for?

No in what would be the foot well directly behind/under the seat not under the shelf.

It is a bolt size hole.

Didn't see one on the 230 when I had the mats out recently.

hey Naj,

The exhaust rubber ring brackets are missing from that pic but I have circled the area I think is relevant.
The hole is on the sloping part of the underbody.

Hey Naj,

Yes the seat belts are installed correctly.

This hole could have always been there but recently my car was caught out over night in a deluge of rain.

As it isnt water tight around the drivers' window seals, the carpet behind the seat was soaked. It was glued down and so for the first time I saw that floor area with the hole.

I try not to be a worry wort.

Does your RHD car have a hole near the exhaust hanger bracket?

I am going to find a body plug and then I can forget about it and start to think about more important things like my front brakes and suspension.
