Crack in fuel pump housing - 67 250SL
« on: April 04, 2024, 17:01:38 »
Colleagues:  It appears that an over-tightened bolt may have created a small crack in the housing of my fuel pump (‘67 250SL).

I would be grateful for any guidance from those with experience with these pumps regarding options for addressing my issue.

The fuel pump works beautifully and the slight lubricant seepage from the crack is not creating a problem in the garage.  There is no fuel seepage.

Is it feasible to find just the housing and replace that?

I would imagine a member here would have one to sell.  Particularly, "BaronYoungman".  Find a post by him and click the PM or Email link below his user name.

Can this be welded? It does not look very serious…

Rodd:  For the benefit of the entire Group, Bob (Baron) Youngman clarified that he specializes only in the rear fuel pump, not the fuel injection pump.

Youngman helpfully directed me to Black Forest LLC, 2900 W. Vera Avenue, Glendale, Wisconsin 53209, which is a Mercedes shop that specializes in fuel injection pumps.

Sorry.  The pic was close up enough that I didn't realize it was the injection pump.

Black Forrest is good, as well as H&R in New York and Pacific Fuel Injection in (I think) San Francisco area.  I'm sure there are others.

If you're not bothered about aesthetics then some resin glue or chemical metal will resolve the oil leak.

And I believe these housings are aluminum, and it may be possible to have it welded. I would hesitate to take it all apart just to swap over another intact housing.

Welding would require disassembly.....

You might try Loctite 290 to seal the crack.

Thank you all.  We found that used/replacement housings were not available (without also paying for a complete injection pump rebuild), so we have sealed it for now and will monitor to ensure that it stops the seepage.   A very useful dialogue.  Gracias!
