euro speedo question

My speedometer has red and white stripes between the 50 and 60 kph marks. Why?

That's (as someone a long time -like 30 years- ago explained to me) to alert European drivers to the fact that, in most countries, 50 KPH is the legal speed limit in cities. I do watch this area as I am driving in cities, so it does seem to work that way ...
