Group, I posted a pic of my car on the photo gallery a couple days ago(see "Chesapeake Pagoda"). One of the responses was a comment on the color & it occured to me that I've not seen it on any other 113. It is "medium gray metallic", DB-178, & is more an olive/brown than gray. Out of curiosity, who has a car that color? -JP- '66 230SL, 5 spd, Kinder

I asked about the color. It looks so very much like my beige-gray metallic but my paint code is DB728H.

According to the listings in both Engelen's and Meredith's book, the 178 Grey metallic was used only on the 230 and 250's

This one is close but I believe its 172. Original was Arabian Gray.
I would say its quite a rare color. There were 360+ Pagodas at the 40th Aniversary gathering in 2003 but not one metallic gray.

Naj- Thanks for the pic & info. Yes, that 113 is much more gray than my color which has a definite element of olive/brown. The DB-178 color may have been unfashionable in the mid sixties. The worm has perhaps turned a bit now. -JP-

I believe that I have the same color on a 1965 230SL with silver hard top and red interior. The registration papers describes the car as grey but in some light it looks olive green, looks good all the same! I attach photos (uploaded but not here?)

113 Gray,
The photos are a bit deceiving with the shine or reflection on the car, your photo looks more like it. I will check the color code on the plate under the bonnet and confirm.
-
Nope I think these are two different colours, and having seen Turlough's car in the flesh at Kilbroney it is definitely a solid grey colour ............and very beautiful !

this thread has totally changed the color of my 230 SL. it's being stripped and prepped now, probalby a few more weeks, and i've been considering repainting in medium blue 350, but seeing the grey cars on internet searches (the lighter 178) i am convinced i want that color. this thread was cool for confirming for me that the color really is MB178.
is it MBZ that can supply this, or is glasurit still around? for the MB178. it is a metallic, right?

Hi Chad - Before making a decision on DB-178 for your car, I hope you can obtain a color sample or some way to see it for yourself. It really is NOT a gray, more a light brown with an olive tinge. I think it unusual & attractive to my eye, especially w/ black upholstery, but you may not agree after seeing it for yourself. -JP-

JP- I will do that, or rather, I have done that recently. I noted that it is rather brown. I have since changed my mind a bit on the color and am still searching for the right match. DB178 is a pretty color, but I think I want something more a smoky metallic grey.
Anyone, know of one?
Thanks, CD

Chad, what about DB190? This is the color in the photos below and described by Ben as solid grey.
-
Turlough, DB190 is very good looking. Perhaps it is a bit dark for me. I keep wondering/looking for this smokey color in metallic. I foound another photo on the internet, on a 1969 280 SL. I would ttach it here but I can't figure out how.

For what it's worth, here's DB 172 (anthracite metallic):

Douglas, DB172 might truly be the color. I need to investigate.
The grey metallic of that link is quite attractive and the right shade: DB172.
www.mbcdi.com/ 113/thumbs1.htm shows the blue color I am also debating on. Anyone know the code?
I have links to the paint code sites, and the ponton site has a good one, but it seems best to see the colors on the w113 chassis.
