Mercedes Benz Mother of Pearl Pen Knife
« on: June 30, 2012, 06:36:55 »
A friend of mine gave me the photoed pen knife last week said he got it at auction with a bunch of other items in a job lot.

From what I can gather they were dealer sold items around the 300Sl period. It is about two inches long. Anyone know if that is correct or not?

That's correct Garry, sometimes you do see them on Ebay. They're very nice.

Garry, I have at least two different Swiss Army knives with the official MB logo on them.  One I keep in the car.  The larger of the two is circa late 1980s, my aunt in Europe got it from the dealer with her diesel of the period.  I think it was a gift shop item from the dealer's gift assortment of branded items.

Mercedes Memorabilia

Garry, on the General Discussion topic, posted about a pearl handled knife with a Mercedes Logo on it.  It made me think of one of my favorite pieces of Mercedes memorabilia, so I decided to start a thread for strange, unusual or rare Mercedes Memorabilia.

During my years at DaimlerChrysler, helping to "merge" the research part of the two companies, I had a few unique opportunities.  Once, during a merger trip, while sitting in a conference room in Stuttgart, I was asked by my Daimler counterpart if there was anything that would make my trip more pleasant.  I responded something like, "How could it be more pleasant?  I get to work in Stuttgart Engineering, eat in the Executive Dining room, and during our meetings be served excellent coffee and these incredible Bavarian cookies in Mercedes Logo Dinnerware from the Executive Dining Room.

Our meetings concluded after about three days and at the end of our last meeting, the secretary of the Director of Powertrain Research came into the room and placed in front of me a gift wrapped box containing what is in the attached photo.

If this set could talk, I'm sure it could relate some incredible stories about conversations in the Executive Dining Room at Stuttgart Research.  I could not have received a more precious and meaningful gift.

I've got something special too, it's a Christmas gift from the 50's.

Gerster, is that a liqeur bottle with glasses and an ice bucket?  I can`t determine the scale, but I suspect that it`s larger than I first thought.  At first, I thought those were shot glasses, but I suspect they are for liqeurs.  Can you tell us more about the set?  It`s really a beautiful gift.

Yes Tom, I think they are for liquers, I bought the box a couple of years ago on Ebay (US) for $50.- and shipping to the Netherlands was also $50.-. The size of the box is 44 x 27 x 15 cm. I've seen this set one time on an automobilia auction were it was sold for €500.- in Germany.

Here are some more pictures.

Well Tom Kizer--you got the plates.  Without the good coffee and cookies, all you have are...plates... ;)

You're right, Michael.  I do miss the cookies, BUT, I still make wonderful Cappuccino every day with my DiLonghi Magnifica.  At my age, coffee is the only thing I can have all I want of.  Everything else - If it tastes good, I have to spit it out.
Fine cars, good coffee and world-class memories are still better than nothing.
