250sl head on early 230sl
« on: June 02, 2011, 11:58:16 »
Is there any issues with putting a 250sl head on an early 230sl. My concern is proper air mixture with the larger intake valves and if the exhaust manifold will bolt up. regards

I wouldn't envisage any problems. Try contacting Mike Haney (member x4158) for advice. He fit a 250sl head to his 230sl (1966).

??? How does the head match up to the block??  Water, oil, pins, cylinders openings and the head gasket, etc.???

Hi,

I did this job a few years ago.

The manifolds bolt right up.
I used the 230 camshaft and bearings.
No issues with fueling either.

Straight forward one for one exchange.
I also fitted the water to oil heat exchanger from the 250 engine. The hardest part was removing the plug on the engine block where the water return line adaptor fits.

Hope this helps.

P.S.
glenn,
The same head gasket is used on the 230 and 250. All holes match up etc...
