Title: Injector Pump Leak
Post by: Mpgeslak on November 06, 2019, 09:04:25
I have a recently purchased 1967 250SL with the older Injector Pump with the red cap and the dip stick.  From my research in the forum this seems to mean it has a separate oil reservoir on the right side and on the left it takes oil from the engine. When I changed all the fluids the Injector Pump wasn’t showing anything on the dip stick, and after filling it I have a leak and it is definitely from the right side.  My research in the forum comes up with situations that deal with overflowing mine is not overflowing, and in fact within a couple of days the dip stick is back to showing no fluid.

Any assistance on how to track the source of the leak would be appreciated.

If I were you I'd take the pump off and observe closely where it leaks, then address that.

hello Mpgeslak, sounds like your pump is leaking from the governor oil reservoir. Seal kits can be purchased from Bosch. The attachment shows two seals (highlighted) that were leaking on my R11 pump several years back. You'll definitely need to remove the pump to replace the seals though. take care, Charles

Thank you for the responses.   Have done a bit more diagnosis and have some more information.  As I mentioned I only re entry bought the car and for the first two weeks there was no sign of any leaks.   I didn’t drive it, but it was started and run several times.  Best I can tell the leaking the leaking started when I put the front end up on ramps.  I am thinking the angle is causing gas/petrol to leak into the reservoir.  As the pump seems pretty dry, it isn’t overflowing which means I have a leak out of the reservoir.  Does this make sense?  Does this mean a rebuild?  I read some other posts which indicate the smell of gas means a rebuild.  All suggestions appreciated.

Thanks,  Michael

If there's any oil left in your pump draw it out and then start over with fresh oil. Monitor your oil level closely and see if it has any external leaks, and if so, how fast it's leaking out. Raising the front of your car shouldn't make the pump leak oil.
