New drum brake lining thickness?
« on: September 02, 2010, 21:25:15 »
I'm have great frustration with the rear brakes.  :'( I just got the shoes relined and now I can not get the drum back on.  What is the thickness of the lining on the shoe supposed to be when new?  New MB shoes are almost $1000 so this is not an option.  Fighting with the springs was no fun either. :(  I am going to have to take them off again.
Thanks,
Brad

You're looking at about 10mm from the back of the shoe to the front or friction surface.

Sometimes the hand brake is too tightly or set up to work for the shoes you just removed. Loosten it off completely and see if that doesn't help. There are also adjusting cams on the backing plate that you will need to turn them back in if you haven't already. They will be out too far if set up for the old shoes.

You are a pagoda God.  I turned the adjusting cams and the drum slipped right on.  Thanks!!! I was having trouble all day with this.
