John,

I can't find those codes anywhere on the internet, perhaps you could write MB?  When I wrote to request my Data Card, I asked that all the option codes be explained.  They were kind enough to do so.  I'm not sure if this info is still correct, but I got the following contact info from:

http://www.mbzponton.org/valueadded/other/datacard.htm

Order a copy of the data card via;
FAX: + 49 7 11 / 17 / 8 34 56
Telephone: + 49 7 11 / 17 / 8 40 40

You may also send a written request to:
DaimlerChrysler AG
Mercedes-Benz Classic Center

Be sure to include the following information with your request:
Proof of ownership (copy of registration or official title)
chassis number
engine number

For further information, you may also contact Mr. Till Dillenburger at DaimlerChrysler.

Perhaps I can offer some partial help here. Frank Mallory published 13 issues of The Mercedes Collector in the early to mid 90's, and his first issue featured an article on "Those Mysterious Vehicle Data Cards" written by a gent named David Gallon.  According to this article, your 60/1 code (or 601) would indicate garnish mouldings on the hardtop plus something else which the article didn't specify.  For example, code 600 is garnish mouldings and code 608 is garnish mouldings on hardtop and oil for rear axle with limited-slip differential, in cannisters. Can't find anything in the article as to what the "1" in a 601 code would be.

With regard to the interior code, the 1 in your 144 code stands for MB Tex (vinyl) upholstery. If it were a 2 or 4, the material would be leather. The entire three-digit code, 144, can be used to find such things as the color name and code of the seat covering, headliner or saftey belts. Again, no specifics in the article as to color names represented by the 44 part of the code. I'm sure MB can find that for you when you need it!

hi finny and rodd,
thanks for your help. I have actually written to the MB classic to decode the data card for me, and i am waiting for their reply. I will kepp you posted.
However, i have a hunch that 60/1 might be referring to the front lights which are different to what i can see to NeelyMB's, dirianghen's, dominiquelee's and are identical to this one in http://www.ritzsite.demon.nl/280SL/MB280SL1.htm

i will keep you porsted with the codes once i get the information
yours
john

John,

Those look like typical European headlights, like mine, so I'm not sure if they would be listed with a code.  Do you know from your Data Card where your car was originally delivered/sold?  It may have something to do with special packaging or something for a particular country.  I recommend writng MB and asking them.

Does the Data Card show the color of the carpet. My '63 230SL Data Card shows black leather interior with GH124 Arabian Grey paint which is not the standard color for the leather interior according to this Forums data card matrix.

Your data card does show the interior code.  It will be either 1xx for MB-Tex material or 2xx for leather material.  For example, my "Natural Leather" is 219.  Looking that up in the database (http://www.sl113.org/data/) shows that it should have brown carpet and brown floor mats, which it does.

Let us know what you find and if it matches what you have.  On a 230SL, you should have wool square-weave carpet.

I also have a 124 Arabian Grey car, but my hard top and hub caps are 158 White-Grey.
