Speedometer ( Which one is correct?)
« on: July 31, 2008, 13:03:31 »
I picked up a speedometer that, supposedly is the right one for my car, 1966 230SL. I noticed the threaded stud to attach it to the bracket for the dash was about twice as long than the other one. Which one is correct? The one with the longer stud was the one that was in the car. Also, can the shorter stud be changed out with a longer one?

  Thank You

Not sure if it's the same in a 230SL, but here's a photo of a kilometer speedometer out of a Euro version 1969 280SL...threaded stud looks long to me...maybe the shorter will work OK?

I tried for about 30 minutes trying to install the speedometer, I just got, in the dash. I could not get the stud through the bracket. It was then I realized the difference in length of the studs. I then reinstalled the original one back in the dash without any probelm. It seems that one can use a bracket which is straight in the back  and the other requires a bracket with an inward bend to it. Maybe the speedometer is for a different model than the pagoda?

Rolf,

Maybe yours is from a W111 Coupé?

The speedos look identical to me (with the exception of the gear transmission ratio, the "Wegdrehzahl") but probably they aren't - Maybe there is little less space in the 111's instrument cluster and therefore the stud is shorter and the bracket is different? :(

The only differences I know are the speedo housings (metal vs. rubber) and the early 220 SE speedo has different numbering in the kilometer version. But other than that .... :?

Will compare the original 1964 speedo with the non-original 280 SE Coupé speedo this weekend when i'll get access to the parts ...

What are the dimensions of the spedometer, diameter and depth?

Thanks a bunch.
