General Discussion / Re: Concours/Resto Mod Restoration Shop
« Last post by Vander on Today at 21:48:45 »
I'm not sure of the exact price of a Mechatronik Pagoda these days, but I would imagine it's over $500,000. They were getting $350k 10 years ago. So if someone wants a high quality restomod such as Mechatronik, they need to be realistic on what it takes to do it. Agree it's best to send the car to them, don't know anyone else doing restomod Pagodas at that high level of quality.

I can give you my experience when I rebuilt my fuel injection pump and injectors . Before rebuilding the pump , i took a breathe and I invested 1000€ for a set of new r2 injectors but the result was terrible . The car was running poorly  , no power , no acceleration at all . I put back the old one and the car came back normal. I’ve been refunded from mb.classic.de because they sent to bosch the injectors and they were actually defective from the factory . No other explanations from them apart for the refund .
The year after I sent the pump and injectors for a full rebuild to Hans fritzsche in Germany . He suggested me to replace my old injectors because the opening pressure is on the low side , about 207psi , the normal range should be from 220 to 260 . Also the residual pressure after 1 hour is low in 1 injector out of 6. The car is running perfectly but from cold it could be better with new ones . Also fuel economy I’m sure could be improved with a new set .
I decided not to buy so far because I’m scared to have the same negative experience but I’m not saying the all r2 are defective .
Any other experiences with r2 injectors?

Glad to hear you got it to go, I am sure you will not regret having installed this upgrade.

I agree.

(Don't blame the hammer if the nail doesn't go in)  ;)

Why the harsh/rude response?
The OP asks a perfectly legitimate question.
Mechatronix are indeed well known for this type of work but that doesn't mean no-one else is capable.

Not a rude response but reality. You know full well, Stick, that the cost of a full “Concours quality restoration” is not a small fortune but a large one. Then add an AMG engine on top of the restoration? Does MB make any AMG engine in crate form (you know like many American companies?) So those two requirements send the price into orbit.

The OP mentioned Mechatronik. So now there is a known high level of quality standard added. They are very good at what they do. I saw and drove one of their cars. Fantastic. Superb quality. Drove like a dream. I’m a big believer in trusting the experienced. So if you want Mechatronic quality why not just start there?

And Bob Hyatt agrees—why not just go to a known entity?

If you know of other shops capable of doing this kind of high-quality restoration with an engine swap— somewhat close to the Mechatronic quality, let everyone know. Is this a task you could take on? Is it a task you would take on? Have you done similar engine swaps?

Glad it's sorted now

Electrical and Instruments / Re: Speedo Stuck?

Can't help with your speedo problem, i'm sure someone will assist

As far as your fuel gauge no longer working, you had your instrument cluster 12 way connector open recently, perhaps you've lost your blue/black wire connection on pin 6, or the black/blue wire on pin 5, +ve from fuse 5, when you put it all back together

I appreciate your input I feel very vindicated now, as fuel does not stay in the injector lines longer than 24 hours but I cannot discover the smoking gun of where it is going. I have put dye in the gas tank looking for fuel in the oil section of the injection pump and saw no sign of dye. secondly, I have removed injectors and looked for leaks on a bench tester which also all 6 passed with flying colors I came to the same conclusion and agree the pump seems to be leaking back but can't find where or how. pump was also "rebuilt" recently.

Yes, looks like a typical US emissions control label.

Electrical and Instruments / Speedo Stuck?

Ok my self imposed suspension is over!  Been driving the car for 2 days.  Everything is working well but I lost my Speedo and my Fuel gage.  My odometer and trip are working.   So it is spinning.  I cannot see the pin the needle rests on. So I am thinking the needle just might be stuck?  Any tricks to get it to move?  I thought I read something somewhere but not finding it.
