Brake booster removal
« on: January 04, 2004, 05:43:50 »
How does one disconnect the yoke of the brake booster from the pedal assembly?
On the 230sl it seems the hole in the alli mounting bracket is too small to remove the (concentric?) bolt from.
Anybody done this job?

Are you talking about the bolt on the "fork" that comes out the rear of the booster?

On my car, the nut for offset bolt is on the driver's side and the large bolt head is on the passenger side.  It should just come out the passanger side like a normal bolt.

Thanks Rod.
On the 230sl, you cannot see the push rod as that alli mounting bracket is quite different and only has a peep hole about 1" diameter.
I was going by the picture in a parts book but today I found that the booster does NOT have a yoke on the pedal side either but just another push rod. So it does come off after you undo the 4 nuts holding the servo to the mounting bracket. Only, on the right hand drive car the inlet manifold is in the way - but thats another story!!

NAJ,

But I do have a 230SL.  Is my bracket incorrect?

For those of you installing a replacement brake booster have a look at Rodd's photo.  The bracket on my replacement booster  was designed a little differently than the prior one.  The old one used a bolt with a collar which prevented over tighning of the bracket and brake petal arm.  There needs to be a slight amount of play in this connection for the booster to maintain a vacuum seal while the brake petal is pushed down.  If not the booster seal will fail and you will loose the vacuum assist.  The new booster required a bushing which served the same purpose.

Hi, Rod,
I think yours is the later model with a yoke on the booster as shown in 230sl parts book.
Mine is a '65 car. The alli mounting bracket is also much smaller and the booster operating lever is a different shape.

Note the cup shaped operating lever for the push rod.
