Distributor Advance - Vacuum Hose Ferrule

Hi Gents,

I am treating my car to a new plastic hose for the distributor vacuum advance. The one fitted is brittle and uses 3 separate sections.

How do I remove and refit the little brass ferrule fitted to the ends of the hose?

Best just to use a new one. I think they're available.

I would think that is a standard metric compression ferrule. I do believe I bought one from the Classic Center a while back. Definitely use a new one as these can become distorted when tightened.

I didn't do the sealing surface of the original one any favours by trying to get it off with pliers !

Once I have a new one what keeps it on? Do you have to flare the end of the plastic tubing somehow?

No, inside the metal fittings are two concave surfaces that mate to the beveled edges of the ferrule. When you tighten the two metal fittings together, the ferrule gets squished in such a way that it snugs into the plastic line and creates a seal. This type of connection is also very common with soft copper tubing. You place the ferrule over the tube and have a little tubing sticking out (1/8" to 1/4"?). How much depends on the fitting, but usually not critical. Keep in mind that the fitting with the male threads goes on the tubing first before the ferrule.

What you were referring to is a flare fitting that is common on steel fuel and brake lines. I hope that helps.
