Washers for gear shifter linkage and 3 digit codes

Sorry as the discussion of shifter bushing replacement is both covered by the Tech guide and has several very useful threads related to it in the forums.

Unfortunately I’m a bit stuck on things that are likely newbie questions but I can’t seem to find answers for through the search..

When I bought my late ‘66 230 a couple of months back I knew the shifter bushings needed changing - having now shifted into 3rd instead of 1st and even reverse while navigating traffic, I made this a priority 😂

I was surprised to find that not only was my gear shifter back to front, some clever mechanic seemed to have fabricated metal rings/washers and put them instead of the thick nylon bushings around the shift ball - also no lower boot. I guess at least the gear stick could no longer hit the driveshaft since there was now a metal ring preventing the ball falling through the plate! There was also a weird semicircular ring rather than a wavy washer beneath the circllip. All 4  bushings beneath were there but shot, as are the 2 on the yolk to the gearbox.

In previous threads I have seen people refer to there being washers in addition to the bushings but I don’t know where these should be since none seem to have been there in my car. Someone referred to there being a larger washer on one side than the other (and this being important) on the bolt going through the two bushings to the yolk to gearbox and yet I see no mention of a part in the schematic/drawing seen in the Tech manual.

Does anyone know if I need these or if they are meant to be there?

In the  gearshift drawing in the Tech Manual there are parts referred to as 292 that could be washers on either side of the shifter bushings (290) but I’m not clear where to find the key for this drawing saying if 292 are washers or the second set of bushings since 4 are needed here not the 2 shown as 290. Sorry if this is mainly common knowledge since I think the drawing and 3 digit codes originate with MB.

1.) What washers if any are needed and what size? (I read that both bolts on either end of the shifter rod are 7mm?)
2.) Where is the key for the 3 digit part numbers used in the MB drawings?
3.) What grease or lubricant should be put on the bushings/shifter ball - or any ata all?
 
Any advice or help much appreciated here, as I don’t want to put it all back together with missing washers and greasing at this point!

That seems to show that I need two washers for the yolk at the shifter end:

292   WASHER.  A 19 899 022 40    -   -
Replaced by: A  111 990 35 40
292   WASHER   002   A 11 199 035 40    -   $10.94

I can't find any other reference to this part on line.

I wonder if anyone knows the size of this washer, since of all things I would think it could be replaced with a non-MB one.

This would also seem to confirm that there is not a washer required at the yolk to gearbox end (or not listed on the schematic) which makes me wonder why I've previously read that there should be ones here and of different dimensions either side too!

The site you sent the link to, mentions no washers between 20/21/22 and 26.
However on the previous site mentioned I found:

Its very confusing and I don't see these sighted elsewhere or in the schematic. It's not clear if 'As Required' means they may not be needed. There is no guide as to which side needs the 0.2 washer and which the 0.3 washer either.

As required and NB means the number of pieces is not defined and you should use as many as you need.

Presence of multiple thickness values suggests that a part is there to eliminate slack (or play) or to adjust distance. You should use whatever amount or thickness you need to achieve that.

I am not a mechanic, but it seems to me that these particular washers are there for three reasons: protect plastic bushing from being hit directly by metal levers, not to let the center hole be worn and to eliminate slack between the shifter levers and bushings.

Also: it happens sometimes that not all the parts are shown on the drawings in Mercedes parts lists.

I'm definitely not a mechabic!

What you say makes sense and I will play it by ear, just ensuring there is no slack.

In your experience would you think there should be lubricant around all these parts or are the nylon pieces themselves the 'lubricant' as friction will wear them down over time meaning they'll need replacement again..
