67 250SL Fuel Problem
« on: October 17, 2007, 16:31:14 »
Hi all,

I am working on a 250sl that has not run since 1986.  After replacing the fuel pump rebuilding the fuel tank, changing the fuel filter, oil etc... and bleeding the FI pump the engine fired right up.  Problem is that after about 15 minutes of running very well it shuts off like when you turn it off from the key.  The only way to get it running again is to re bleed the FI pump.  Even then it take about 15 minutes to get fuel to even come out of the pump itself.  I have cracked the intake, return lines at the pump and am getting plenty of fuel.  Any suggestions?

I forgot to mention that the car ran great when garaged in 1986.  It is in great condition.

Hello Daniel,

It sounds like  you still have a fuel delivery problem. Look up the "fuel tank tour". You may still have some issues in the tank, the  filter screen in the elecltric fuel pump, the main fuel filter or the fuel return line.

Check all the above or hook up a pressure gauge on the fuel line at the intake starting vlave tp confirm this diagnosis.

It sounds like your car runs until the flower pot is drained of its fuel, thn is unable to refill. Top off the fuel (above half tank) should also help if a plugged flower pot intake is the fault. Keep us up to date!
