My wood trim was refinished at some point with a glossy finish. I just scuffed a piece up and sprayed a satin finish but it still has a bit of gloss to it.
Was the original finish matte or satin? I have read different opinions on this sight. The wood around my rear window looks original and it seems to be a matte finish with no shine.
The satin finish is on the left and my rear window trim on the right in the pic below. There are lights directly overhead making them shine bit more more than normal.

About satin (matte). A bit more glossy than the rear window wooden bow you have
& clearly less glossy than your dashwood piece.
I can get you a picture next weekend when I am back. Have got a new factory dashwood two-piece
which shows how it should be.

"Natural open grain finish" is correct for the Pagodas. Mercedes in that era only used full gloss on their luxury cars, which the SL did not fall in that category.

So that means very little gloss I guess. I may try another manufacturers satin finish as the Matte I tried last night comes through as flat

John, there are plenty of online resources for achieving the kind of finish you want. I've done some similar finishing, though not on "our" dash wood. It involved a large number of coats of rattle-can (oil base; do NOT bother with water base materials) satin polyurethane. I used Minwax because that's what was available. After doing a few light coats, I let it dry for a couple of days. (try to do this in a clean environment, and don't try this when the humidity outside is high). I then rubbed down the finish with a rottenstone compound and water. Then I repeated that at least twice. The idea is to get a very solid "base" of polyurethane for the final coat. The final coat, if you are using a satin poly, should give you the result you are seeking. Some say a final rubdown with 0000 or very fine bronze wool will further impart a more uniform satin look, but I didn't need to do this.
If you want to experiment before you start on your own wood, get some scraps of teak, walnut or whatever and experiment.

I think the satin finish you’ve achieved is close to what the factory turned out but it’s obvious it is no longer as open grained as it would have been originally. Personally, the more open grained look isn’t as appealing to my eye but that’s clearly a personal call. Different woods even if they’re of the same species take stains and finishes differently, so finding one look that is deemed “correct” is highly unlikely. I think you had said you planned on using a parchment interior and I feel what you’ve done will look amazing: a nice contrast while retaining a subdued, elegant look.
I had my trim pieces refinished at Madera recently. They look almost identical to your pictured pieces. When I got them back I applied a thin layer of clear Liberon wax using 00000 steel wool. It gave it a slightly richer look and provided some extra protection. I’m quite pleased with the finished product.

Here’s what i came up with from spraying a coat of matte rather than satin. Very happy with the results. It has a low luster that doesn’t come through in the picture.

Achim , Looks very similar to the ones mounted in my car by the MB Classic center in Portugal. I was a bit concerned as they looked pretty dull, and the ones I had in my car were in bad shape but clearly had parts still visible with a glossy almost varnish type look to it...I wasn't sure which were correct. MB here installed Supposedly "MB original " from Germany. I'm now more convinced these were the correct type, thanks.But quite pricey....i got charged approx 1.600 euros for the 2 bow pieces , speaker grill and center console tray.
