Chain tensioner
« on: May 09, 2024, 12:48:11 »
Hello Pagode friends!

After the first 500 miles with my overhauled 280 SL engine, I retorqued the head and tomorrow I will check the valve clearance.

Engine runs well. I hear some puffing when I release the throttle, but I might have solved that by choosing the correct 123 distributor setting: Curve E in stead of 8.
We will see...

However, I still have some concerns about the chain tensioner.
The tensioner is brand new, but the question is: is the chain too loose?? I did bleed it 500 miles ago.
I still have the old one, so I could replace the new one by the old one.

I included a video to show the play in the chain (Tensioner 2). It is on the pull side of the chain, the other side looks OK to me.

One thing to add. When I turn the crankshaft a little by hand in the clockwise direction, the play has gone. (Tensioner 3). Looks much better!
Could it be that when the engine is running everything is OK, but when it stops the chain gets a little looser, because of a small counter clockwise rotation due to compression?

I hope you can give me some advise.

Regards,

Halvor Sens.
