Title: hood release
Post by: seamus on January 08, 2008, 08:35:57
hello, I recently acquired a 71' 280SL and I'm having fun trying to figure out how this beautiful machine works, and in the process noticing all the things that I can't afford nor have the know-how to fix. That said I feel fortunate to have found this fine forum. My problem is I can't even get my hood cable to release the hood. The cable is intact with the release lever and is sliding fine, I have pulled with all my might(not very much), and the hood won't release. Is there a way to access the releasing hook(s) to pop the hood. I assume it would be from underneath, but just don't know. thankyou in advance for any help. Seamus.

Did it release before you bought the car?  Is there resistance on the cable/lever or is it simply moving freely with no result (broken or disconnected).  If there's resistance, try having someone push down gently on the hood, preferably with a wide flat surface (like a thin book) just in front of the air intake on the cowl and then pull the release.  The idea is to release the pressure on the locking mechanism a bit so it releases and not to dent the aluminum hood.

Yes sir, it did release fine, though it seemed to require a little more pull than normal. Yes, there is resistance, big time, I'm afraid if I yank as hard as my frustration would allow, I'd find the next weakest link. I did have my wife push down on the hood like you suggested, no avail. Thanks, Seamus

Well, then we go to plan B.  Get a big, honkin' pry bar, put it in between the cowl and the hood and rip 'er open!

Sorry I couldn't be of more help.  Maybe others will.

What if you push down while she pulls?

I've not experienced this, but would suggest that you pound on it rather than press on it. While the wife is gently pulling the hood release, put a thick phone book over the latch area and give it a sharp jolt or two with your hand.
I wonder, also, if it would be possible to push upwards from underneath the car with something like a 2x4?
The prying suggestion was made in jest, I'm sure.

thanks for inputs, I finally got hood to open, frustrated I just grabbed the cable, plastic sheathing and all, where it penetrates firewall and yanked the slack and pulled, and it popped open, lubricated the locking mechanism, will try to adjust cable. Must admit, car looks a lot better with hood closed, under hood very dirty. Cheers, Seamus.

There is an adjustment at the locking mechanisim in front of the air scoop.  I can't recall how it works, but that's where it is.
