Hello everyone,
10 months ago, I purchased a 280SL that has been extensively restored. A few weeks ago, I got caught in a tremendous downpour and noticed a large puddle of water in the boot (trunk). I subsequently traced this to faulty tail-light seals, which I've now replaced. However when doing this job I removed the two rear steel cover plates, that provide access to the number plate lamps and noticed standing water (about 1cm) at the bottom of this compartment - where the rear valence joins the body. I can't see how the water made its way into this area. Should there be drain holes in this section? I haven't seen any reference to these in the posts about water leaks. Any thoughts would be most welcome.

Not aware of a drain hole there...
First thought on source of water - type designation holes and/or "Automatic" sign holes - do you have them sealed?

Also just check where the number plate screws enter the rear panel they may also allow water to enter that cavity.

Hi - thanks for the advice. Will take a look. There's a small hole in the floor of the boot. I think water must have dripped in from the tail lights, then found its way into this cavity, perhaps through this hole in the boot floor. I've syphoned as much as I can and sprayed a load of wax into the cavity, so I hope that'll hold the rust at bay, but it's something to keep an eye on.
