Hello, the engine number on my 230SL have been corroded and the tag is missing. Are there any other location on the engine where I can find the engine number? I have attached a pic of it. Appreciate it if someone have a hint.

Very unusual. I would venture a guess that this is not the original engine, but a replacement that whoeever fitted it did not do the best job stamping in the (probably same as the original) engine number. That part of the engine block does not corrode to any appreciable extent.
I know nothing about data cards, but would imagine that would show the original engine number.

That's the only place you'll find it on the car. :( Some numbers are readable, but not enough to be useful. Like Cees said, that area isn't really corroded. It just looks like a bad stamping. That's going to make engine specific parts ordering difficult. You don't know what it is.

Fellas, I suspected the same thing. Thanks for the confirmation.

It seems the stamping is usually across the top of that flat area.

Yours is at the bottom. Maybe it is a replacement block.

Try putting some oil on the area and use a wire brush. It may clean it out a little.

This suggestion should help. And shining a light from the side might pick out the numbers better.

Ok, I Will give it a go. Thanks
