I am looking for a new stainless steel exhaust system,
are there any views on who does the best quality.

timevalve in melbourne beach FL. Make sure they ship it unwelded together, as the fit is very important, and it is hard to manage long rigid pipes. Have someone weld in place. It's a two man job, about a day. One of the hardest things to do is fit them correctly on the exhaust manifolds.

I have my TImevalve exhaust for over 20 years and it is great. I have one on my 300 SEL 3.5 also and both have worked very well. I did not weld them together, I clamped the sections together and I have had no problems.

Some people have good results with clamp-up. The clamps are a little un-slightly if you are picky about looks. I have been installing Time-Valve systems for over 40 years. Sometimes I have to use a torch to make some slight adjustments (front pipes mainly). I like these systems. There are some issues you will have to deal with. The tail pipes are slightly undersize, so your chrome tips will be a bit looser. A screw or crimp can fix this. There is no exhaust gas cross-over built into the front pipes. Lastly if TimeValve sends you the connector pipes (between the muffler and resonator) welded to the center muffler. They will be backward. I always request that they not weld them as per original so I can weld them in correctly. With these connector pipes installed backward, the pipes come closer to the rear tire than usual. About half the cars out there have the connector pipes installed backward. Not a big deal, still works, just not right. The exhaust note is slightly different. Most owners do not even notice the slight change. Disconnecting and re-connecting the front pipes at the exhaust manifolds is the most tedious and difficult part of the job. Get new bolts and nuts. Don't forget the new seal rings and hangar rubber rings. Make sure you have all the correct steel hanger brackets. Bad installations will cause squeeks, rattles, vibrations, fumes and ruin the drivability of the car. Those expensive heat deflectors (asbestos flats sheets) protect the rubber hangars from exhaust heat. Pay attention to all clearances, especially where the muffler clears the rear lower quarter panel. The exhaust pipes should be parallel with the rear bumper in back when done, and should not stick out too far. The front pipes cannot be installed unless the car is tilted 45 degrees or unless it is at least 48 inches off the ground. Otherwise you may have to take the starter out first. Big job. If you install these systems correctly, you will never have to do it again.

Hi Joe - quick question on the Timevalve, as you note they don't have the gas crossflow connection in the front pipes: I presume you don't think this really matters? Just wanted to check because my stainless system also does not have this feature and I was wondering whether I should be looking to add it somehow. Thanks for your (and anyone else's for that matter) view.

Hi Cees, I heard its not critical, someone told me that it does improve fuel mileage a bit? If so, I can't say how much. It would be nice to get some good information on this.

I installed a SS system last year and I'm pretty sure it has the cross over feature on the front pipes. It's not a Time Valve system so clearly there are places who get this right.
I also had some SS systems years ago that were made in England by a company called double S exhaust. I believe they were bought out but I don't know when or by whom.

We just installed a Timevalve system on our 1971 280sl. We ordered the complete system with tips and hanger/install kit. We had to do some tweaking to the system on the front pipes and rear section but nothing to tough. The system sounds good and has no buzz or rattles. They were out of stock when we ordered and produced the system within the time they stated to us.

How expensive are these kits. Do they come with resonator and muffler?

Maurice- Is the SS exhaust for a RHD or LHD car?
I purchased the stainless steel exhaust for my LHD 280SL from SLS in Germany, it was a perfect fit, it took me all of 3hours.
My business partner then wanted one for his RHD 280SL. I purchased his stainless steel exhaust from Quckisilver in the UK:

Great service from them, it was a perfect fit. It took me a bit longer to fit, as with the RHD you have to work around the steering box.
Quicksilver don't supply the fitting kit, which I had to order separately from SLS.

I have a timevalve system available for a LHD 230SL available if that is of interest, and I am in the UK.
It is for the early system that has the two same length downpipes.

I have had a double S stainless exhaust fitted for 18 yrs it has the cross over pipes as well,no problems
whatsoever. they are from Cullompton,Devon, Tel 01884 33454. If they are still going that is.Cheers.Mike.
