Toolkit bags again
« on: January 13, 2024, 11:57:14 »
Hello all, my bag is made from a strange material, not sure if you would describe it as basketweave, it's very stiff, but that could just be the age, or being locked away in a cold boot

It looks very much like Badali's tool bag shown here

https://www.sl113.org/forums/index.php?action=dlattach;ts=1452891187;topic=23628.0;attach=41492

Would anyone know if these are correct for a 230SL and what fabric would this have come from, it seems too stiff to be seat fabric

I also have a 2nd canvas bag, although i don't think the tools are original or correct, but it does have a tyre pressure gauge, regretfully no box.  Does anyone have a picture of the correct gauge for a 230SL, what should be engraved on it?

Many thanks

Bob, I may be wrong but I believe the our tool bags are smooth MBtex on the outside.  The material on yours looks a lot like the material seen on early 911 tool bags.

The kit shown in the picture is original to my car.  It seems from prior discussions that they used whatever material they had on hand to make the pouch.  The inside is green canvas.

I've read about basketweave fabric being used, but i've only seen mine and now yours, Mike Mizesko mentions them in a few posts, and there's one on Ebay at the moment, but you can't trust the description

Anyone know about the tyre pressure gauge details?

Thanks

Tyre Pressure Gauge only came in the rare Special Lubrication kit.  Not standard issue.  As for the basketweave cover, very common,  mostly MBTEX from sedans of the age.  I 've never seen that material used in a Pagoda. They made those bags from leftover seat material and top canvas that was in the general Bin, from all cars.  Genuine original nonetheless, as far as I know.  May want to warm it up with steamy towels, but I'd keep it out of the oven.

Hope this helps.

So, a few different fabrics used, all of these were taken from the forum, so assume they are Pagoda tool bags, unless anyone knows otherwise

Slightly grained, textured with stripes, basketweave & not sure how to describe the third one, taken from the original 1967 car in the tech manual

Nice Amalgamation Bob,

these all look right, though i've never seen the one with the striped material before.  I've got 8 or 10 full kits, but they are tucked away. Now that Bill sold one for $2600, I'll have to drag them out soon.  LOL.

Thanks for the topic so near to meine herze.

Regards,

On this striped material - I think this is how the top of the seat cushion as well as the top of the back rest look like - before they are folded and sewn.

OK—that does it!

I’m going to take my toolkit, my grill star and my soft top lever handles and put them in a safe deposit box at the bank.

BobH,  My VIN ends 13302.  Is yours close to that?  Your tool bag is nearly the same as mine.

Hello Brad, my VIN is 9066, early 1965.  I would think all 230's, perhaps apart from the very early ones, and the early 250's could have used this material until they changed to the later perforated pattern, that didn't have the defined basketweave

Check this web site out.  They sell reproduction kits in different materials.

Love George, but I'm far too OCD to do repro.  my first bag was a cognac bag from them.  I found an original 2 months later, and the repro has been at the bottom of a box for 10 years  should probably sell.  cheap.
