Retractable seatbelts

I have read every post and searched every topic to try to figure out the answer to this question.

When mounting the retractor reels underneath the rear parcel shelf, is there a simple way to get access to put a rear mounting plate behind the sheet metal where I will be mounting the seat belt bolt through? Would like to know before I order the stuff and then tear it apart. Thanks

See also attached. Use a hole metal saw, diameter some 35mm; this is then covered with a rubber plug.
M-B has one A110 987 0744, or you find a plug in a hardware store. This plug (hole) is later not visible as it sits behind B pillar side cover.

Did you find in your search the MB recommended installation PDF? I don't see in it a procedure that Hans has posted below. The recommended procedure seems less invasive.

If you found it, you have options.

I saw the instructions....but how much access (how difficult) is it to fit the plate from the opening in the rear corner (at least as I can see)? Any special technique?

Vande,  get yourself one of those long flexible magnets to hold the plate while you screw it from the outside. Your fingers will never fit  ;)

it depends where you want to mount the retractor. In one version - preferred by a very knowledgeable German vendor (Pagodenteile.de) who supplies bolts and a counterplate that you can access from underneath the car. No welding is required and only two small and one bigger hole need to be drilled. Shown in the first attachment with German instructions. It is a very easy installation., but it is a bit tricky getting the retractor spool to be sitting parallel to the floor otherwise the lock will not work!
JA17 uses a different method shown in the second attachment. It has the advantage that you have more room for the spool.

So far it looks like Hans' technique is simple and effective and doesn't require any cutting of the vinyl trim piece either. First I'm trying the magnet method...most likely I will end up drilling a hole and inserting a plate and being done with it.
