so we had several weeks of hot and humid weather here in Austin TX, which has killed batteries on my cars in the past.
this am i went out to drive the 230 sl and the battery was completely dead.
I drove it a few weeks ago and had just taken it off a battery tender last weekend.
called the local MB dealer to see if they had an OEM replacement part 002 541 87 01 26 and they wanted $403 and change plus the recycling fee.
that's too rich for me. the last one cost $190...
off to search for alternates

Genuine MB batteries are made by Interstate. Find an interstate battery store. There are other good options as well.

gosh, I'm surprised you were still able to find an MB battery (002 541 87 01 26). Sorry to hear about the price - $403 is crazy expensive. The last white MB battery I bought was $152.15 plus Georgia tax (MSRP $179 minus 15% MBCA discount) https://www.sl113.org/forums/index.php?topic=16906.msg186955#msg186955. As I recall, the MB battery barely lasted 3 years. I replaced it with a Champion, Group Size 24F - without the decals. I bought the Champion battery at Pep Boys.

hi
thanks for the replies!
John at the classic center told me to get a 000 982 71 01 from the dealer. $ 169.60 correction 369.60+ fees. 24 month warranty
the nice folks at interstate have a MT-24F for $190 5 years first 2 free.
I may also look at napa batteries, they have a AAA batt with at 5 year warranty for $199

Many of us here have purchased the 124R from Walmart. It’s a plain black box with labels removed, it fits perfectly, has ample cranking power and for the price can’t be beat. Sometimes it goes on sale and is less than $100. I’ve had mine on for over a year with no problems and quick starts.

Bought it too. Fits and looks great. You can always print some vintage labels for looks.

So what a cluster
Called the dealer they said they had a 000 982 71 01 in stock and even went to the back to verify
When I got there they brought up a different battery 001 982 79 08 which is a squat black battery and is $362
the 000 982 71 01 has been superseded with 001 982 79 08
I had them bring up a parts guy I have worked with for 25 years, he found 2 in Fort Worth that he could order.
he had the parts manager override the replacement battery codes and order one 000 982 71 01 for me from fort worth.
the 000 982 71 01 is $300 pre mb club discount.
Maybe on Monday I will get the correct battery, if not i will go to napa and get their AAA battery.
i guess the message is if you want the MB battery in white pretty soon you will not be able to get one.

Here’s a pic of the Walmart battery sans it’s labels. It’s made by Johnson Controls who also makes Delco, Diehard, Bosch and Varta to name a few. Note how nice the hold down fits. If you’re dead set on an MB battery go for it but I consider this a very nice alternative at a much more attractive price and easily found.
