Identification of a Pagoda year
« on: April 16, 2013, 23:08:40 »
Hi Guys,
Newly converted Pagoda lover, been too consumed with my Shelby Cobras for the past 25 plus years .
I recently purchased a late model Pagoda from SC in the States and is en route to Australia.
Need to get help to find out what exactly it is.

Its a Euro spec car with a 280 motor, the car has no Mercedes id plate but a SC stamped plate describing it as a 66.

What specific items identify the year ?
I am not really concerned about the missing id plate, the car is complete minus a soft top and a heater fan switch, great condition Red with black interior 4spd manual. And best of of all i got it for a bargain.
Thanks in Advance.

Soul.

Assume you have or will have the VIN number...this will tie the car to a specific month of production.

Even if the plate is missing, the VIN is embossed on the inside of the fender in the engine compartment.

Many thanks,

will look for that, is there any thing obvious that will distinguish the model?

All the best,

soulman,

Congrats on your new purchase ...

Posting some photos would help identify what you have.   I am not clear on what info you have and what info you don't have.  Do you have a VIN from any paperwork?  If you do, here  is the info in the tech manual that will help you.

http://www.sl113.org/wiki/DataCard/VIN

I think you said the car was in SC (South Carolina, or Southern California), if it's a California car, a title is required for a car to be sold, and the title will have a VIN or partial VIN.

No Soft top ... is it a California Coupe with a backseat? -- if so it never had a soft top.  Or did it have a soft top and it is missing?  There is a big difference.

enjoy

Thanks Kampala,
Definitely not a CA coupe, as it has the lid and housing for the soft top.
It has no Mercedes id plate at all only a SC aluminium plate near the drivers door pillar above the light switch.
The SC title has it as  a 66 but the motor shows 68!
It is a euro model, low seats, long head lights.
Can I buy a new id plate.???

Thanks for advise and help.

Many thanks Gary.

All new to this,

Are there any good Pagoda parts suppliers you could recommend in Australia?

I am Melbourne based.

Saul
I am also Victorian based at Hanging Rock. There are quite a few of us Pagoda owners around Melbourne.
Whilst there is MB Spares in the ACT, they are often very expensive, I have found that Buds Benz, Millers and the Mercedes Centre all in US and SLS in Germany to be able to supply most parts. On the Forum there is a list of suppliers and Vendors and the items that they sell or services they can supply.

I'd you are looking for something in particular often doing a search on the Forum of the item name will produce comment or discussion on suppliers for the items.

Thank you to all the help and replies,

It turns out that despite a bill of sale stating 280sl along with all the the badges and a 280 motor, the car is a 66 230!

Not all that fussed about that, still would have purchased the car as  a 230 with a 280 engine,

Like the old Greek saying goes ....

Never marry from a photo!

So the fun begines,

Will be rebirthing it as a 230.

Thanks Guys,

Had my shipping company pick it up from Anderson South Carolina, when it arrived in Compton CA it was missing the Trunk badge, but clearly obvious of the 230 in print showing.

The car leaves the States soon and should be in Melbourne Australia in about a month.

The worst bit is being the younger brother of a 250sl CA coupe owner , i have been bragging about the better/faster "IMO" car that  little brother has purchased for a steal of $18100 US.

Now time for humble pie !

Regardless of what it is they are a beautiful car, and thats coming from a guy that owns a Kirkham too.

Looking forward to the journey, lemon or not.

Soul.
