Replace the chrome windshield trim
« on: August 21, 2017, 19:51:12 »
Is it possible to replace the chrome windshield trim (1136710130, and 1136710230 + 2 each joint cover/trim pieces) without R & R the windshield?  The trim is in very bad shape, but the glass and seal both look pretty good, with no leaks. (I suspect that someone replaced the glass, but reused the old chrome trim because of the cost.)  It appears from the cross section that I can just pry out the existing chrome trim, lube up the new one, push it into place, and the barbed foot should seat into the rubber gasket?

You need to remove the windshield to replace the trim.  Also the wood inside needs to be removed.  I had an auto glass shop remove mine and replace.  Here is a link to my posting...

Are you sure that you need to remove the windshield? I recently had my windshield replaced, but preliminary to the replacement, they removed the trim strip from the gasket. This was before doing any of the other removal. I was surprised, because I had heard that you had to remove the window before replacing the trim. Then when he re-insalled the window, with the gasket, he didn't install the trim until after the window and gasket were back in place. So, it appeared that he could have removed and replaced the trim, without removing the window.

If yours was done that way then you are correct that it can be done.  My installer said he always puts the trim in with the windshield together.  There is less chance of breaking the glass or bending the trim.

He used a nylon rope inside the rubber gasket to get it to open and then close around the metal lip around the window opening. He would pull the rope and the gasket would open and then close around the lip as he worked his way around the opening. He had two other people working to set the windshield in place from the front as he did that.

After getting the gasket and windshield all installed, he then installed the metal trim.

The trim is very soft and many get distorted when trying to install them when the screen and seal are fitted.
The best way is to install the trim into the seal and then the seal into the car.

I agree. It's the best way to do this.
